6 weeks scan showing twins

Hi all, had a scan today at 6+2 due to previously early miscarriage and am shocked that we are having twins. Have 2 DSs already and wanted one final baby to complete our family. Very shocked and apprehensive about having 2 more children so just looking for some reassurance really. Both were measuring 6w and saw a heartbeat with both. X

Hello! Be assured what you are feeling is totally normal. We found out 10 weeks ago we were having twins too - having gone in expecting no heartbeat to finding there were 2 threw us in a spin. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd be twin parents! We also have an almost 2 year old. What I will say is it took me honestly quite a few weeks to wrap my head around it, but now I can't imagine it any other way and cannot wait to meet them! The fatigue and hormones won't be helping so go easy on yourself and give yourself time and space to process. We are lucky, and you are only given what you can handle ❤️❤️

For those that have twins, what type of twins do you have/are having? I’m worried about them sharing a placenta and all the extra high risk things that come from that. X

@Herewegoagain0 i had non identical, boy/girl separate sacs and separate placentas, only scary thing that happened in my pregnancy was my cervix started to thin a little at 29 weeks so i was given steroid injections (they hurt like a bitch btw) and put on bedrest for a week and rescan showed cervix was back to normal, went into labour at 36+5, but was due a elective c-sec at 37 weeks so thankfully labour stopped on its own, babies were in neonatal for only 1 night, and spent 3 days in hotcots cause they were small (4lb5 & 4lb7) they struggled to keep their temperatures up but we were home by end of day 4 xx

We have separate sacs and placentas for our twins (finding out gender at 20 week scan in a few weeks). Honestly I've found the care so much better than with a singleton pregnancy. We have a dedicated specialist multiples midwife and consultant and from 20 weeks we are seen by someone every 2 weeks which is really reassuring.

I had MCDA twins, shared a placenta but a membrane between them x

Herewegoagain0 · 14/05/2024 10:41

@afroqueen83 and were they both ok during the pregnancy? Do you remember at what point you found out they were MCDA? Am only 6 weeks so not sure when we would be able to find out x

So without wishing to frighten you too much.... I was originally pregnant with triplets! But baby 3 was in its own sac entirely seperate from the other two and was always growing behind and by week 9 had stopped growing completely. It was sad but it made for a safer pregnancy overall.

Because of how far away baby 3 was it was clear early on the other two were in their own sac from around week 6 and then week 9 or just after they confirmed there was a membrane. Some sonographers were better than others at locating the membrane and it would depend on the day, but as other posters have said as a twin Mums have said, you will get extra checks and scans particularly if you have MCDA or MMDA twins as they do carry a slightly higher risk and I was consultant led throughout. That said after around 23 weeks (i may have this slightly incorrect but it's somewhere close to this) the risk of TTTS decreases.

My twins were born 6weeks early due to complications with me (not them). And both weighed a fantastic 5lb 2 each.

Please keep reaching out if you need it, I know how overwhelming twin pregnancy can be, especially in the early days x

Thank you for sharing. Just looking for as many experiences as possible as feel so out of my depth right now! X

We had DCDA twins, the lowest risk. We had scans every month. A friend had the highest risk (forgot which type that is now!) And towards the end I think she was having scans every other day to check they were OK. Can't remember if that was routine or because there was an issue. I would say join twins trust as early as now because they can give you so much support and advice! All the people who work there are twin parents so understand.
