Generally you can take maternity leave from 29 weeks if you want, a lot comes down to your type of job and commute

gettingolderbutcooler · 09/05/2024 17:40

I went at 37 weeks but it's different for everyone. Good luck.

AimeeLou84 · 09/05/2024 17:42

Hey OP. I’m 30+1 today and really struggling now but aiming to go on leave at 38 weeks. There’s no right or wrong time to go, if you’re exhausted and your work will allow you to start now, then do it. Good Luck!

longdistanceclaraclara · 09/05/2024 17:44

I got signed off at 21 weeks and delivered at 31. We had issues though.

Noidontwanttobeayesperson · 09/05/2024 17:46

For my twin pregnancy (second pregnancy) I put in to leave at 38 weeks (knowing I would be induced at 39 latest). However was put on bed rest at 25 weeks so went on sick leave and then transfered to ml at 36 weeks (had dt at 37 weeks). I'd put in as late as possible as you can move it forward if needed.

@gettingolderbutcooler @AimeeLou84 @Noidontwanttobeayesperson with me being a twin high risk and ivf pregnancy I’m not aloud To go past 37 weeks to deliver. I was speaking to my consultant and he says he’ll be shocked if I make it to 30 weeks which was my aim . Just wanted to see when others went off

Might be worth posting this in the multiple pregnancy board OP for people who understand.

With my twins they took me in for c section at 36 weeks. I stopped work at 30 weeks and couldn't have gone a day longer I was huge and very uncomfortable. Completely different to a single pregnancy. Good luck with your babies.

Waitwaitwait22 · 09/05/2024 18:56

@ontheflighttosingapore yeah I was thinking 30 weeks will be a push so I am aiming for then getting bigger by the day ha . Thank you

I went at 35, section booked for 37, I don't think they like any one to go beyond 37 with twins. I think I didn't actually feel much worse at that stage than I'd felt earlier, so you might surprise yourself by how you feel later on.

Jennywren8 · 09/05/2024 19:36

I pushed to get induced at 37 weeks and stopped working at 35. They were big for twins, 7.5 pounds each!

Wow that's big for even a singleton, respect!

25mini7 · 09/05/2024 20:07

I went on mine at 29 weeks as I went into labour at work.

Elephantswillnever · 09/05/2024 20:09

I was signed off from 26 weeks tbh. I was induced at 36 weeks 6lb and 5lb10. Carrying twins compared to a singleton was so much harder. For me it was the equivalent of being 9 months pregnant from about six months and was utterly exhausting in a needed a rest after going up a flight of stairs kind of way. Also so much monitoring / scans.

SJR86 · 09/05/2024 20:35

I was signed off sick at 28 weeks with my twin pregnancy (exhausted and the midwife was concerned if I continued working it would risk the pregnancy) but started went on annual leave at 34 weeks and started my mat leave at 36 weeks.

MaryMary6589 · 09/05/2024 20:37

Once you've told your employer your date, you can agree to bring it forward but you can't push it back. I'd tell your employer the latest you think you can get to and then if you have to being it forward because you're struggling then you can. You could have your babies at any time so they will be prepared that you might just go off suddenly!

I think I ate a lot!

VeraForever · 09/05/2024 20:46

A doctor will exempt you from 29 we eels unless otherwise.

Nat6999 · 09/05/2024 20:49

My sil finished at 32 weeks & delivered at 35 weeks.

PilgorTheGoat · 09/05/2024 20:56

Try to delay your maternity leave as late as possible. Do you have a good sickness policy? It’s reasonably likely you’ll have to stop work for health reasons. I was hospitalised from 32 weeks and delivered at 36.

Waitwaitwait22 · 09/05/2024 21:07

@Jennywren8 oh wow they were a great size you must have been exhausted!
@SJR86 yeah 100% this is my first pregnancy so I know no different but I am starting to feel exhausted I have had it really good up until now with no sickness or anything.
@PilgorTheGoat yeah I do have holidays to take which I am planning on using before my maternity starts was hoping to make it to July but consultant reckons I may not as my back is starting to feel it sitting all day in office

I have twins. Started mat leave at 36+3 and had elcs at 36+6. It was during covid though so I wasn’t commuting.
