Had an early private scan (7 weeks) my sister is convinced there are two yolk sacs on this pic! I'm unsure 🤷🏻‍♀️ surely they would have said this when I went?!

Possibly yes, in two sacs. You’ll need to wait a few more weeks to know x

Kandalama · 09/05/2024 03:04

They can be detected in scans that early.
I had twins and that does look like twins!

Are twins in your family OP

Kittylickingplate · 09/05/2024 03:06

That is what mine looked like but further apart.

PoopingAllTheWay · 09/05/2024 03:07

Surely they would of told you?

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 09/05/2024 03:51

Yes, this looks like twins!

JinxedJenny · 09/05/2024 09:24

@Kandalama surely they would of told me at the scan? Yes 2 of my brothers have twins and my uncles on both maternal and paternal!

@PoopingAllTheWay that's what I thought but my sister has me questioning it now!

That looks like twins to me too
Are you going to wait until your dating appointment to find out or book private again?

Could you call and speak to the sonographer that did your scan privately and ask them to review it? They might offer a rescan if they're not sure from the pictures

JinxedJenny · 09/05/2024 09:35

@twoandcooplease I have my dating scan booked for 3rd of June so going to wait till then! The sonographer didn't say anything at my scan so maybe best having 2nd one with someone else 😊

It runs straight down the maternal line if they are non identical

There is some research to see if a male can pass the twin gene on to their daughter who could then affect a twin pregnancy but nothing conclusive yet.

So as it stands any direct blood male relatives wouldn’t affect the chance of having twins as it’s to do with egg production not sperm.

Unusual coincidences though in your family.

JinxedJenny · 09/05/2024 11:27

@Kandalama That's very interesting! Thank you. Yes its a real mix. Both parents have identical twin siblings (all boys). One of my brothers has identical twin boys and my other brother has non-identical twin girls, but none in either of their partners immediate family.

That’s a lot of identicals. They are really rare but not hereditary.

Your brother who had non identical twins might find a female relative down his partners line had twins.

It was only after I had twins I discovered there were several sets of boy non identical twins in my maternal grandmothers side ( ie my grandmother and three of her sisters ). I only found out after tracing my ancestry.

I think this is not unusual in early pregnancy, but many pregnancies start as twins and end up singlets in the first trimester. Likely the sonography didn’t say anything because it’s too early to tell. Just wait it and see!

Kandalama · 09/05/2024 11:51

I do hope @JinxedJenny you come back and tell us!

In which case it might be wise @JinxedJenny to actually get confirmation at this stage. Why not book a GP or midwife appointment and ask them to confirm the scan., they will need to know in order to manage your pregnancy.

Confirmation why? It’s a completely natural process. If we scanned all pregnancies at early gestation a greater number of them would appear to be twins than end up being twins

In response to PP comment on VTS. This can affect the pregnancy later.

JinxedJenny · 09/05/2024 12:09

@Kandalama I have contacted one of my friends who enter the medical profession as sonographer and retrained. Now a senior midwife :) hoping she can ease my mind a little! I do have another scan booked for the 3rd June

There are four sets of twins in my husband's family (albeit one was via IVF) both sides. None in mine. We had twins.

There are lots of similar families including OPs
However
Men produce 15billion sperm a shot, that doesn’t mean we all have the chance of having 15billion babies.
How many we have is determined by how many eggs we release at ovulation
Most women release one
Those with a specific gene release more than one
That gene is inherited from our mothers and hers before.

Many generations of women do not have twins (especially as it’s more prevalent after age 35.). But we still carry the gene and pass it on to our daughters.

There is no medical way you can have non identical twins because of your dhs family, he’s producing sperm, not eggs.

This is the current science.

Given the lack of historical records on twin births it’s hard to find them in our families. I only know because I trawled through written records in our families church. My mother didn’t even know her mother and aunts all had twins.

I can see one gestation sac and one fetal pole on that image. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
