Ectopic pregnancy surgery

So 2 weeks ago I had laproscopic surgery to remove my left fallopian tube due to an ectopic pregnancy. I was given 2 weeks off work by the hospital and I'm due back to go to work on Friday but I am unsure if I am able to lift heavy objects and stand for 5 hours. Emotionally I feel fine as I wasn't planning on having any children as I had the copper IUD so it was a shock at the time... obviously I didn't want to lose my left fallopian tube, but it is what it is and I do already have 2 children. So I came to terms with this obviously it has been difficult emotionally for the first week but I feel OK. Physically i aint too sure if i am ready to go back to work. I work in a High school kitchen and I am on my feet for 5 hours ( I'm not entitled to a break) I also can be lifting heavy drink cases and big food trays. Pushing trolleys full of food. My stitches still haven't dissolved and my stomach is still bruised and today I am getting pains down the start of my legs, on my thighs. I am just wondering if anybody else has experienced an ectopic pregnancy and had surgery and how much time they took off?

I want to say sorry about your loss and what you had to go through as it was really rough the 1st week of recovery 😢 but I am getting there now but still unsure whether to take a bit more time off or not. Also it's a loss for my reduced fertility too as I didn't want any children atm but if I did in the future it may be difficult now to get pregnant and I am so scared to even get any birth control as I read the other option i was going to choose an implant they have a risk of ectopic pregnancy too. So yeah it's a confusing mix of emotions.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Sorry for your loss. I had extra complications after my surgery (Port site hernia) which resulted in needing extra surgery. If it wasn't for that I think I would have been fine after 2 weeks. I was doing online work the day after.

Your fertility is only reduced by a small percentage. From what I remember it's reduced by about 15%? I got pregnant on the third try after surgery, so try not to worry too much about that!

I was fine (physically) after 2 weeks, despite being extremely rough and having a much longer hospital stay than planned. If your employer is aware then can you just see as you go along? If it gets too much ask for a rest or go home if needed?

This is what I'm wondering as well. My tube ruptured at work and I had emergency surgery that night. I only got out of hospital today so I'm not expecting to go back to work anytime soon but don't want to be off too long.

I think working from home is a lot different to working a physically demanding job after an operation. My job is 5 hours on your feet none stop which might not seem a lot but it is when you are busy and after an operation it could be. Also lifting a lot of heavy food tins and crates of drinks... pushing trolley loads. I am nervous to go back as I have been listening to the drs advice and not lifting heavy objects, light excercise... I have been in touch with my manager she thinks I should ask the Dr so I am ringing the Dr today.

Grandtherftwalrus I am so sorry to hear you experienced an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured at work 😢 it is very traumatic. I get the imperssion i think it's whenever you feel ready to go back to work and what your workplace is like. I am getting bored at home too so I don't want to stay off but I also don't want to be doing too much so it affects me. As my work dont really care about peoples health your just there to work. I've signed a policy where im not allowed to eat at work aswell. So rushed off your feet without food lol. I will ask my Dr about maybe recommending light duties? Maybe a fit note instead of a sick note. Who knows what he will recommend x

I don't do lifting at work but it can be 12hrs+ on your feet. I went back to work on Friday after breaking my ankle in July and I was on my feet for 11.5hrs and I was in agony then this happened on Monday.

I don't think I'm meant to work!

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/05/2024 10:47

And I'm sorry about your experience as well. I had no idea i was even pregnant just that I had an unusual period so when I told first aid and then my vision started going because my blood pressure dropped so low they called an ambulance. Just got home last night.

DemelzaRobins · 09/05/2024 11:18

I took 5 weeks off sick after my emergency surgery for a ruptured ectopic.

I have an office job and can WFH so when I went back I WFH for the first 4 weeks or so (couldn't face seeing people). I wouldn't have been able to go back to a physical job after a couple of weeks.

I was much better physically after 3 weeks but wasn't OK mentally at all (was having flashbacks etc.)

DemelzaRobins · 09/05/2024 11:19

I was initially signed off for 3 weeks as that's when I needed to take the follow up pregnancy test to check I was no longer testing positive and therefore didn't need further surgery.

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/05/2024 11:35

They never mentioned anything about me having to take a test to see if it was negative, I assume that's because they got it all during surgery?

Mentally I'm fine just physically sore.

Emsie1987 · 09/05/2024 11:46

I had two weeks off. But I went back to an office job/wfh one day a week. I was in still a lot of pain which lasted for another three weeks. I couldnt of gone back if it was a physical job.

Danioyellow · 09/05/2024 12:07

Is there any way you could go on light duties?

ParrotK · 11/01/2025 09:27

Hi everyone i just want to update you i ended up having a month off work and then i worked for one day and it was one week half term so i had 5 weeks off overall. The dr wanted me to stay off a bit longer but i was getting bored at home. Anyways when i did go back i was getting pains in my stomach from lifting objects so the workplace was very nice and they said i shouldnt lift anything. So i worked 7 weeks without lifting i felt a bit useless tbh. But now i am ok and everything is back to normal. I just think if you have a physical job on your feet dont rush back as i do think i should have had 8 weeks off really and asked for light duties but i was bored.
