Hello,
I'm 6 weeks 2 days pregnant today and the morning sickness well and truly kicked in on Friday! Friday I was really poorly! Couldn't keep anything down at all then Saturday and Sunday I managed to keep food and water down although the nausea was ridiculous! Then yesterday I had another bad day of sickness, being sick over 5 times! I'm pretty much bed bound on my bad days but this doesn't seem to be everyday!
I've been taking cyclizine which works every now and again but isn't life changing!
I've been sick twice this morning but I've kept a bit of breakfast down and some dehydration sachets. Does this sound like hyperemesis gravidarum? Or just moderate pregnancy sickness which is to be expected! I'm trying to get hold of docs to try different meds but trying to get through to them is like getting blood out of a stone 🙄.

Doesn't really matter what they call it, it's horrible!

I was signed off work with HG - that was with permanent nausea and vomitting upwards of 10x day, 24/7. I remember waking in the night numerous times to go and be sick. But I didn't need hospitalising, and I could generally keep water down. So I felt a bit of a fraud saying it was HG!

Keep on at the GP - there are definitely other meds worth trying.

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 07/05/2024 09:35

Not sure it's HG but I would be taking no crap from any GP and see what meds are available to you.

I had HG and was on 3 different daily pills after having been admitted to hospital. It was only then I was taken seriously.

Don't let yourself get to that point where you are so sick you can't function. And be pushy, you have to be sometimes to get what you need.

Until your appointment, make protein your best friend, get magnesium oil for your feet and sip water all day. 💐

HG is horrible! I was in hospital most of my pregnancies and lost so much weight! Doctors and midwives fobbed me off as it being normal. It ended up collapsing and being rushed to hospital. I explained to hospital all my symptoms and they couldn't believe I hadn't been admitted asap. As soon as even water hit the back of my throat I was violently sickly! I'd binge eat when I didn't feel sick before being admitted just in the hop of keeping something down! After 17 weeks I was discharged but had to go back in hospital every couple of days for a drip as I was still so poorly it only stopped at 32 weeks and then baby came at 36. Second time they booked me in for a c section 4 weeks early as my sickness never stopped. I really feel for you it is horrible x

Singleandproud · 07/05/2024 09:51

When I had it I lost 25 lbs in 6 days, was vomiting green bile and my urine output was pretty nonexistent and what there was was lucozade colour. I had never, ever felt that ill in my life and actually wanted to die or miscarry to just make it stop and go away. I'm fairly sure I had left it way too late before trying to get help as I thought it was normal and by the time I went to the GP was sent straight to hospital to be admitted, being IV hydrated was amazing though. I felt better for about a week and then was put on motilium which sort of worked. I lived on Heinz tomato soup and McDonalds chips and cucumbers as they were all I could keep down for most of the pregnancy.

DD is nearly 15 now and healthy as can be, has always been strong and tall so don't worry about baby's development. I was two dress sizes smaller once I'd given birth than before hand but I never really recovered from the nausea side of things and I assume it's related but I get travel sick even on the swings when playing with DD when smaller or in the car if not driving which never used to happen.

I hope you feel better soon.

Wow, thanks so much for your responses! You all sound like you went through it horrendously! It's really not spoken about enough is it?! I'm currently off work (although not signed off) and feels like my boss just doesn't quite understand the severity of it!

I'm not sure what they class as HG, either way it's awful. When I think back I've no idea how the food I kept down allowed me to survive never mind grow a baby.

I spent a lot of my pregnancies on an IV, which was the only thing than made me feel better.

WeightoftheWorld · 07/05/2024 11:29

Call the doctor and ask for a different anti-sickness medicine.

Pregnancy Support Sickness charity have a helpline and offer WhatsApp message support. They're great for advice on medication, wellbeing etc. they also offer a peer support service.

Hang in there. I'm 16 weeks with #3 and have had HG every time but my first pregnancy was the worst and the only one where I've had to be hospitalised. I take Xonvea now which is the medication that was worked best for me, I wish I had tried it in my previous pregnancies. I'm much better now than I was a month ago and I started a phased return to work last week. Having a bad day with nausea today though unfortunately Envy not envy!

I rang in work with it once and was told it wasnt like a proper sickness bug and they would see me at normal time 🙄

Platinicares · 07/05/2024 12:06

Hi guys,

I'm 4 weeks +3 today. I know its early on but I was lucky to find out straight away with 2 strong positive tests after my period didn't come when it was due.
Can anyone tell me if heartburn when eating proper meal food (like to the point I can't eat it and will throw up instead) is normal? And also is diarrhea another common side effect at this stage?
I can hardly find anything online other than general information, but I want to know about the stage im at now.

Any advice is appreciated. Just for some background: Given that I haven't been able to eat a meal I have been snacking as much as possible (nausea) which seems to be manageable and drinking lots of water and home made fruit smoothies, as well as pregnacare 1 per day.

Singleandproud · 07/05/2024 12:26

@Platinicares it's likely your post will get lost amongst the original one and you would be better off starting your own thread but yes all of those symptoms are completely normal. It doesn't really matter too much if you manage to eat alot unless your are very underweight, your body will prioritise whatever your baby needs and direct it there.

Thank you so much! Sorry I have never used this before and couldn't find where to make a new post 😅 I really appreciate the reply though thank you! 🙏

Cyclizine, stemitil and metocIopramide didn't help at all with my first two pregnancies but I was prescribed Ondansetron during my 3rd pregnancy and it worked wonders. Hope you find something that helps x

Amawake86 · 07/05/2024 15:00

Also suffering. 2nd pregnancy for me. Currently 6 weeks, thought I was doing better this time with cyclizine from 4 keeping me going but since Friday I’ve been feeling nauseous all day and night, drywretching my way through the day. I’ve not been vomiting that much yet but the continual dry wretching is horrible. I was on cyclizine and ondansetron last pregnancy. This time would like to get to 11 weeks before starting on ondansetron so I’m going to give xonvea a go (Gp prescribed today but I need to wait for the pharmacy to get it in). Definitely recommend getting in touch with pregnancy sickness support, my GP had never heard of xonvea for instance and so having the knowledge to ask for it was really helpful. Trying to hold onto the fact that this is not forever but also not to put a timeframe on when I will feel better as I know from last time that holding out for end of first trimester was not helpful. Big hand hold from me to you.

Hi OP I'm 7w3

This is my second HG pregnancy I started a threat called HG support if you want to join it's only me atm!

I'm suffering too, I've been bed ridden the last 3 days and I've been sick about 7 times today, haven't been able to eat

I think I'm going to call the GP again tomorrow for help, I don't know what else to do

hey,
so I had hyperemesis in my first two pregnancies but my current third pregnancy is by far the worst.
i was totating between 5 different antiemetics and it got to a point in one day I was sick probably about 40+ times despite the anti sickness.
I work in the medical field so I do know the last and final resort is steroids. Had I not known this myself I don’t think I would have been offered it. I had to advocate for myself and said I wanted to try the steroids as it came to the point that I was considering a termination I also felt suicidal at points.

i just want to let me ladies know that steroids is an option im currently tapering off haven’t been sick or nauseous with them and also have sctually been able to do my daily activities. I’m 15 weeks today.
obviously steroids do come with side effects but i do think the benefits outweigh the risks if you really are suffering.

advocate for yourself no one understands it unless you go through it yourself

Mummyneedsacoffee · 18/11/2024 06:23

Oh I’m so sorry for you. I had it bad years ago and just couldn’t function.

keep sipping water even if you bring it up. Ice cubes even help. Make sure the doctors don’t fob you off. When they finally saw me they realised I was very very dehydrated and I ended up on a drip a few times so really push to be seen if you feel bad.

i lived off bananas in my first few months. Easy when they came back up but protein when some stayed in my tummy. I hope you feel better soon x
