Would you go for NIPT with these results ?

Hi I'm 36 & this is my 6th pregnancy but I only have one living child.
I'm currently coming up to 19weeks in this pregnancy & it's the furthest I've gotten so I'm extremely grateful.

My 12weeks NT results were
NT: 1.6mm and 1 in 10,000 for DS & nhs said we won't be needing to offer any more tests.
I'm considering paying £400 for a private NIPT test, it's a lot of money for me to find but seriously considering getting it due to my anxiety. Would you bother if you had my results ?
Partner thinks I shouldn't bother if nhs don't want to do anymore testing & it be wasting money.

As I suffer with chronic anxiety and sometimes I just can't feel happy in my pregnancy. I've been referred to Perinatal health so waiting on that too. I'm also waiting nervously on my 20wk scan too so I would probably get the NIPT after that I don't know!!
Thankyou for reading
Xx

Those results are extremely good and I wouldn't for a second think you need any further testing. My daughter was 1 in 2300 and 1.4mm she's 3 weeks old and perfectly healthy

If you can afford it, go for NIPT. We did it as we were anxious too and it gave us peace of mind.

it was only £150 though from what I remember, 3 years ago.

I definitely wouldn't go for NIPT with those risks, haven't had my screening yet but decided I'll go forward with NIPT if risk is more than 1 in 500 which is still only a 0.2% chance.
I'll be happy if my baby has a 99.8% chance of being healthy.

In terms of risk, those results would be considered very low. Very low! So if you do go for NIPT and in the extremely unlikely chance it does come back positive for any abnormalities what are you going to do next? If the plan is to have a termination then the quicker you do the test and get the results the better. The longer you wait, the harder it is to terminate. The ARC website is a really good resource.

Alternatively, spend the money on a some counselling/therapy sessions to help you manage your feelings of anxiety and worry. It is no wonder you are super anxious, considering your pregnancy history (and I am sorry about all the losses that you have been through). All the tests in the world won't give you the reassurance that you crave if you are so overwhelmed with anxiety.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Are you planning on having the anomaly scan? They can tell an awful lot about how healthy babies are by the formation and function of their organs and lots of soft markers indicate presence of chromosomal differences which are detected by NIPT. You may want to ask to speak to a screening midwife after your scan to go through your results and what was seen or not seen.
Given your stage of pregnancy, this may be all scheduled for before you could book a NiPT appointment anyway

Arewethebadguys · 05/05/2024 07:59

I would 100% go for NIPT. If you're concerned enough to post on mumsnet, this will keep gnawing at you and your anxiety won't let it lie. Just get it, regardless of the fact your results aren't low. You can literally buy peace of mind on this. Good luck! ❤️

My 20 week scan is 12 days.

I went for the NIPT as I was also 36 but I had it at 10/11 weeks. If I had those NHS results I don't think I would have gone x

PitterPatter3 · 05/05/2024 14:57

I did NIPT. It came back with a risk of <1 in 10,000 for each of the three trisomies. I don’t think it ever comes back lower than that? (Somebody please feel free correct me if I’m wrong). So it wouldn’t add anything in your case. At least not for Down’s.

cherrytree2 · 05/05/2024 16:58

I'm steering on the side of not having the NIPT done. From what others have said and what I've researched and I Can't afford it anyway.
As stated I suffer with chronic anxiety and it's been the same all the way in the pregnancy and as I've got the 20 week scan approaching it's been double the amount of anxiety more than normal x thanks for everyone's reassurance and support xx

NIPT to my understanding doesn’t say yes or no, it only gives you odds. What odds would you be happy with if 1 in 10,000 isn’t enough? If there’s a number then fair enough, but if there isn’t then there’s little point.

and If you get the NIPT and get the number you want, will the anxiety just go away? From what you’ve said it won’t, and you’ll just be £400 down
i think you’re understandably anxious, and I can’t imagine how stressful it must be, but hopefully you’ll be able to get some MH support and also some reassurance at the 20 week scan. Good luck op

cherrytree2 · 05/05/2024 18:15

@Toastiecroissant yes I agree. It's with anxiety it doesn't want to reason with science and you're right with odds like 1 in 10.000 when will it ever be enough with anxiety the truth is it won't be.
Thanks for your words.
I've spoken to a lot more women whose odds were a lot lower than mine and didn't opt for any further tests.

I am seeing my therapist this week so I will be talking with her about this.
Thankyou 💞

Nipt will only say "less than 1 in 10,000". It doesn't give any odds lower than this. So there's no point. I had nipt when my odds were 1 in 390. All was well.
