Pregnant and possible sarcoma

Sara1988 · 02/05/2024 21:11

I'm 18 weeks pregnant.

Went for an ultrasound on what I thought was a ganglion cyst on my foot and was told the lump was 'possibly sarcoma.'

I've been referred for an MRI but am still waiting for my appointment.

I'm terrified.

I know this is unlikely as it's an unlikely situation, but has anyone else had something similar and been OK?

Anyone? I'm really scared.

What a worry for you - how long will you have to wait for your appointment? The vast majority of lumps and bumps are not cancerous so I know it's easy to say but try not to let it consume your thoughts - it's natural to worry about something like this but just take it day by day xx

Sara1988 · 03/05/2024 18:21

@lollydu i should hear within the week and be seen in 2. Will be a week on Monday. One thing I read today is that 9/10 referrals are not cancer! This has helped a lot!

Not sure why you are not getting any responses on this as usually people are very quick to reassure and offer a hand hold with things like this. Must be the algorithms or something. Just bumping for you Flowers

Yes most lumps and bumps turn out not to be cancer, try not to worry too much and at least it's not too long to wait for your scan xx

My mum had a sarcoma on her leg but she was 70 at the time and obviously not pregnant. It was removed under local anaesthetic and tested. It was about the size of a large marble. They had to remove a bit of skin from her arm to cover it all up as it left a hole, but the hole 'swallowed up' the skin graft so there is a small dent there still years later. I didn't want to read and run - sorry if not awfully relevant.

@UpsyDaisysarmpit thank you, that does help. Glad your mum's OK. At this point I'd lose a foot it it meant keeping me and baby safe x

Hi @Sara1988 not sure if you have already had your MRI. But I had a similar situation to yours although it was a lump behind my ear. GP thought it was just a cyst. Ultrasound scan was inconclusive. Then had an MRI - again inconclusive and so was then referred to sarcoma team. I had the lump removed and thankfully it was found to be benign. I thought I would just share my experience in the hope that it might provide you with a bit of reassurance of a positive outcome. As it is so worrying and stressful not knowing and waiting for scans and results. Take care

Sara1988 · 03/06/2024 07:14

@ChocChip01 thank you for your response. So glad things turned out well for you! I have my biopsy tomorrow and appointments with surgeon in two weeks, so hopefully will get some good news.

I had a sarcoma on my foot 20 years ago, came up in pregnancy, I went in for a second operation to remove surrounding tissue and fortunately it hadn't spread, no further treatment required, it was a very scary time, by the time I had the operation my son was 18months old. Mine was very deep on top of the foot, so had to wait for baby to be born before they could operate.
I hope your results are ok but in worse case, it should be a straight forward treatment.

Sara1988 · 03/06/2024 08:13

@thisdarncyst thank you. I did wonder it they would operate while I'm pregnant. I have the biopsy under local tomorrow but not keen on going under general.

My surgery was under a local. I think nowadays local is preferred if appropriate as less risk and quicker recovery time.
Good luck for tomorrow. I really hope you have a positive outcome too! Go treat yourself with something nice afterwards to take your mind of things. xx

Any update op @Sara1988 xx

Sara1988 · 29/07/2024 21:14

@Elisabeth3468 I don't have sarcoma! I'm fine. The handling by nhs was appalling and I had to deal with two months of unnecessary stress while pregnant but a happy ending! Thank you 😊

@Sara1988 what a worrying time for you, glad it turned out well.
I've had a scare myself as found a lump deep inside my shoulder muscle and it's bigger than a golf ball. I went to GP last week and he referred me for an ultrasound but was going out my mind waiting and imagining the worst. I am also pregnant with second child and have a 2 year old.
In the end I paid privately for an ultrasound and had it on Saturday and they think it's a muscle hernia! I am going to have the nhs one too but hopefully it just confirms what the other one has said.

Sara1988 · 30/07/2024 18:58

@Elisabeth3468 it's good they're taking it seriously. Rather be over tested than under tested. I never had anyone actually sit down and tell me what was happened. I just kept getting letters for further and more invasive tests with no explanation until finally a biopsy came back 'clear.' I'd ask as many questions as possible and be prepared for poor standards of care. I'm sure you'll be fine though x
