Soft cheese ...?

Can I have Philladelphia (because after weeks of nausea and vomiting, that's all I fancy).

What about Mozerrella on pizzas?

I would kill for a peanut butter sandwich, but with all the mad allergies on both sides of the family, I think my mw would rather I ate raw meat washed down with unpasturised milk.

yes to philly and Mozarella.

missjennipenni · 02/04/2008 11:54

Both those cheeses are fine. And i even eat peanut butter.

Bluebella · 02/04/2008 12:27

Heya, Mozerella is definately fine, not sure about 'fresh mozzerella'

As above, both cheeses are fine. I love nuts & peanut butter and have eaten both throughout, in massive quantities. Was reassured by MW that they are quite safe & a very good source of proteins and fats UNLESS there is a history of nut allergy in family. Thankfully no evidence in mine BUT with yours, you need to make an informed decision. Hard I know with all this conflicting advice on just about everything. Agree with hanaflower on new research. I also read that complete avoidance can make an allergy more likely. Perhaps we should hibernate for the full 9 months.

AHLH · 02/04/2008 12:47

Allergies -

Me - Eczema, psoriasis, hayfever, washing powder
DH - Eczema, hayfever
FIL - Hayfever, housedust, rhinitis (has to have injections into back on at least one of these)
Niece - nuts (prob came from fil's various allergies)

On this basis, MW and I decide swapping peanut for Marmite on my morning toast for a few months wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for advice on cheeses. Looking forward to Stilton next Christmas!

you can have hot blue cheese i think...

Oblomov · 02/04/2008 12:57

I don't beleive in forbidden foods in pregnancy.
Many the risks are very small - say a tiny bit of pork pate on a cracker, from a pre-packed packet, the risk is minimal.
many countries eat soft cheeses, pate, prawns, all sorts of things, all through pregnancy.

vicsta · 02/04/2008 13:19

I completely agree in principle Oblomov. Before I realised I was Pg I ate raw fish & raw meat whilst on hols also pate, shellfish & raw shellfish and not always in the finest establishments either! You'd think if there was any damage to be done, then I'd done it all already in those delicate early weeks. Now 31 wks with a baby whale, I'm sure, so no harm done. But, as soon as I found out I was Pg I became the epitomy of restraint. The risks really are tiny but, for me, the fact that they exist means I wanted to avoid them. The realistic me wonders how the human race ever got so far and how our ancestors could have possibly safely procreated without this mammoth list of do's & don'ts, however the pregnant me is much more paranoid.

I seem to be living on philly at the moment and agree with eating what you fancy.

I found out I was pregnant in France and by the time I got back to the UK had eaten virtually everything on the "do not eat" list. No ill effects!

slinkiemalinki · 02/04/2008 14:28

I thought the new peanut research found - on the contrary - that avoiding peanuts while pregnant could actually make the baby MORE likely to have a peanut allergy. Who knows eh.

AHLH · 02/04/2008 17:40

Hi Hanaflower I knew I'd forgotten one:

Me and Mum - Bee stings. Big time.
Me - Amoxycilin.

Still undecided on peanuts.

last pregnancy i only ate the "allowed" foods but this time i'm just being sensible ie making sure the food is not mouldy and is in date, only buying from a "clean" place ie no burger vans, and eating what i fancy.

Philly, any cooked cheese and peanuts are fine. there is no evidence about peanuts and allergies (all the recommendations have been withdrawn).

I too have allergies (some preservatives, bee stings, latex, lanolin) but DS doesnt appear to have any.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 02/04/2008 18:44

I thought the new research still suggested avoiding peanuts if either parent suffered from allergies, inc hayfever etc.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 02/04/2008 18:47

this is taken from the food standards agency

Should I avoid peanuts?
peanuts

Serious allergies to nuts and nut products and some seeds affect about 1 to 2% of people in the UK. Your baby may be at higher risk of developing a nut allergy if you, the baby's father, brothers or sisters have certain allergic conditions such as hayfever, asthma and/or eczema.

If your baby is in this higher-risk group, you may wish to avoid eating peanuts and peanut products when you're pregnant and breastfeeding.

There have been some studies published recently that question whether women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid peanuts and peanut products, because it may in fact increase the risk of your baby developing a peanut allergy. The Agency is carrying out a thorough review of all the research that has been done on this subject and will use this to decide whether our advice needs to be updated.

AHLH · 02/04/2008 19:36

Hopeysgirlwasntbig I'd seen that too on the FSA website.
