Talk about every stage of pregnancy, from early symptoms to preparing for birth.

If they suspect this one is a little porker will they induce me slightly earlier - conflicting advice- Any MW's??

At my 30 week scan they estimated baby to be 5lb2oz

They said they work on the basis of 1lb every fortnight which would make this baby over 10lb even more if I go over my 40 weeks.

MW has advised against my planned HB for this and for another condition but someone said to me that they will probably try and induce me at 38 weeks to avoid a C-section.

I have heard soooo many stories though of people being told they were having big babies only to give birth to a 7lb'er.

it is well known that their "guesstimates" at weights based on scans are grossly inaccurate.
I think they usually tell you that there is something like a 20% margin of error.

I totally wouldn't worry about this, because they're likely to be wrong about it.
I also know someone who birthed an 11lb 12oz baby at home, by herself. so don't despair

It is a popular belief, which I think stands to reason, that your body will not grow a baby that it cannot birth (unless you happen to have GD or something) so I would ignore them. but then, I'm like that

Well as long as they put an extra stitch in to tighten it back up again I will be happy

I had 2 HB, first 8 and a half pounds second baby was just over nine pounds.

DD (2nd) was on 97th percentile with upperbody/shoulders and I was scanned a few times extra to see if HB/natural birth was possible. And it went all fine other then I asked the MW to help me deliver the shoulders which she did.

Didnt even have stitches (O dear what does that say about the state of my fanjo!)

Mintpurple · 01/04/2008 23:18

Horseshoe - I would very sceptical of that weight at 30 weeks, it should be something like 2.5 - 3 lbs. You need another growth scan to check this and also worth having a glucose tolerance test to check for diabetes.

5lb 2 is about 35 weeks size - could your dates be wrong and you are a month further on?

I would make an appt with the hospital tomorrow to check this out. Sorry if Im worrying you.

I think it's a bit dangerous to assume all will be well on the erroneous assumption that your body will be able to deal with whatever it grows-remember the high rate of infant mortality not so long ago?
Having said that, just gather as much info as you can and make n informed decision when you have to.
Best wishes.

My third baby was going to be a huge one according to scans, my fundal height etc. There was a lot of pressure on me to have a c-birth. Had a fabulous mw who I now, in retrospect, realise doula-ed me. DD2 was 8lbs 1. Smaller than DS1 and bigger than DD1 but still a reasonable size. Gas n air was my only pain relief with her.

hello horse shoe my current bump is a huge boy too. discovered he may have another issue too but thast another story... his growth scan at 30 weeks recoered the same as yours. I liove in Australia so a slightly different system here but have had sacns every 2 weeks since and am now nearly 37 weeks. last on bump was just over 8lbs. Untill the comploication i was more tan happy to try a normal delivery and was advised that waiting for spontaneous labour was the best option although with dd i ended up being induced so chances were looking that way. I was told i could have take my pick.. have a section at 39 weeks. be induced at the same time and trial labour or wait for labour to commence naturally and suck it and see. all change now because of other stuff but i do trust the growth scans mostly because they have done so many and they show consistent growth. i think a one off scan may be inaccurate but a series must say something? On a plus for big bubbas i 6 lb bub can jsut as easily get stuck as an 11lb one. no research to say inducing early or compulsary c section is beneficial.

mintpurple my last baby was 37 weeks and he weighed in at 9lb 40z
my fourth baby was 35 weeks and 9lb 20z
they just said i had big babies but they were wrong........
now in this pregnancy they tested me for GD it came back yes, they gave me a kit and my blood sugar levels are sky high....i am now in insulin.
you would think after having one big early baby they would have tested me it was only cos i moaned and asked like hey whats going on here test me this time they did....
bit im my experience my babies have ranged from 5lb 6oz (5th baby 35 weeks)to huge ones that would have been 10 or 11lb term
big babies for me were the easiest to have, they were easier to come out and get into position,my doula calles it natural gravity.......
im around 24 wks now and again this baby is big now they come out on 0-3 mths clothes and can never do the top popper up.both the big ones had chubby bodies and double chins......oh and a head full of hair, long enough to put a long pony tail in.
ask to get checked out
hope all goes well for you

i had the other babies early naturally anyway,

preggersagain · 02/04/2008 09:37

you need to speak to merryberry- 11lb 11oz hb!!!!

bandgeek · 02/04/2008 09:40

I remember going to my doctors when I was about 34 weeks pg with ds...he told me the baby's weight was 7.5-8lbs! I nearly fell off my chair

I ended up being induced at 39 weeks due to pre-eclampsia and he weighed 9lb 7oz

caramelbunny · 02/04/2008 09:49

I agree with Mintpurple and 5lb2oz does seem really big for 30 weeks. DD was born at 32 weeks weighing 3lb 13 and she was on the 50th centile at that weight. Just had a quick look at her growth chart and at 30 weeks the 99.6th centile line is 2kg or 4lb6oz.

I spent the latter part of my pregnancy being told what a big baby I was carrying (not just by rude random strangers, but by the midwives as well).

My sister was reassured about the size of both of her babies before having to push out an 11lb 9 and an 11lb 3! They still left her to go 2 weeks overdue with second despite huge size of first.

From what I've heard, growth scans are wildly inaccurate.

fleximum · 02/04/2008 09:56

Agree, growth scans can be highly inaccurate. I ended up having a scan at 37 weeks as I wanted home birth and had had glycosuria during pregnancy. Consultant examined me and was happy baby didn't feel too big then scan put his size at 42 week equivalent! Made me have hospital birth just in case and good job too as once he was born (emergency section at 10 days overdue due to fetal bradycardia) he was 11lb7oz! Suggest you try not to worry about it as even if it is a big baby, no guarantee you couldn't still have a completely normal term delivery. Good luck.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 02/04/2008 11:06

I haven't read all the posts, so apologise if I'm repeating what others have said.

Basically sizing scans can be very inaccurate. As can midwives when palpating your tummy. My DS1 was 10lbs 10oz and even when I was in labour the midwife was convinced I would 'produce' a 7lber, she was VERY shocked ! Therefore I had a growth scan with DS2, all scans predicted an 'ave' sized baby, I was allowed to go overdue with him and he was 10lb 4oz!! Both natural deliveries, no problems.

With my 3rd pregnancy (8 yrs on) I was 'concerned' I might have another whopper, the scans indeed predicted a whopper, said whopper was born by cs (she was breech) and was a very modest 7lb 8oz!!

What I'm trying to say is, don't worry, even if your baby is big, it is possible to have a normal delivery and quite possibly the predictions are wrong anyway, so please relax!!!

Good luck
