Hello mums.

Im brand new and sparkly here :)

I'm nearly 40, 12 weeks pregnant with my first baby (at last, hurrah!!!) And I have fibromyalgia, AND I'm very large.
I have been driving a Hyundai i10 for a number of years which I love for its affordability. It's so economical. £30 a year to tax, £50 a week in fuel, nice and low insurance group. The downsides are how low and dinky it is. I need more height for my dodgy hips and my dodgy back when im having to bend.
Anyway... with having a baby on the way and my pain being hard to deal with now let alone when I'm hoiking a little one around I need to invest in a "new" car. Except it will be old because I'm not Mrs moneybags.

I was thinking about a Nissan Juke for the height but do they have isofix and can they actually fit a chunky buggy in? I'm being gifted an isofix car seat and an egg buggy (I think!)
In an ideal world I'd have a Toyota Yaris Cross or a VW T-Cross but I can't afford either!

Any other suggestions? Really needs to be as economical as possible as I commute and 80m round trip 3+ times per week. Thank you all!

I have a hyundai ix20 and it's perfect for my needs. Seats are a bit higher without the SUV price tag. Higher boot so it's easier to get things in and out (now DD is older she stands in it to use the potty without me needing to bend too!) And there's no lip on the boot so things slide in/out easily. It's got so much space, I can fit loads in the footwells, under the boot itself (where the spare tyre goes has LOADS of room) and it's not too bad on fuel, 30-35mpg usually. Our big pram (uppababy vista) fits with room to spare. I call it my little tardis.

On the car seat, check if its a rotating one... Honestly saved my back!!!

I switched from a Hyundai i30 to a Kona and love it

VictoriaBenHaddou · 27/04/2024 14:02

Hi, thank you both.
Unfortunately neither of those would suit - a Kona would be lovely but far too expensive (the cheapest I can currently find is over 10k and is a cat S write off!) and an ix20 only comes in a 1.6 engine which will likely be far too expensive to run.
I need to keep costs as low as humanly possible.
If I could have something as cheap to run as an i10 but a foot taller that would be the ideal! A big ask.

I had a Nissan Juke when DD was little.
It had isofix. The boot was reasonable sized but not huge. I had to pop the wheels off my pram to fit it in but it did no problem. They were easy to pop on/off but that was a Silver Cross so you might want to check if the egg does this.

Dacia sandero Stepway. They are a bit like little suvs and are meant to be cheap to buy and run .

I have a 1.4litre petrol hyundai i20 and its perfect for our family of 3 (almost 4!)

Netcam · 27/04/2024 14:38

I had a Hyundai i20 for many years, we still have it, it is now DH's car, had no issues with it and it's so cheap to run. I got a new Suzuki Vitara automatic a couple of years ago and I love it. I did lots of research and they have a great reputation for reliability while being affordable and it's much nicer to drive than the Hyundai.

Had to change to an automatic and I've got a Nissan Juke, it has ISO and can fit DD silvercross in the boot with room to spare. I've got a lighterweight pram I use though which lives in my boot as I can't always lift the SC as it's heavy.

VictoriaBenHaddou · 27/04/2024 16:21

Thanks everyone I am looking into the dacia sandero stepway.
I can't afford any of the other suggestions and some of them don't really offer any additional height which is 100% essential. I will continue to look into the Nissan juke too. Just waiting to find our what model the buggy is to get rhe measurements of it.

@MrsTeepee the seat is a rotating one yes, and if I don't have to bend it will save me a heck of a lot of pain. It doesn't have a carrier option but I'm not sure I need that (wouldn't be able to manage it anyway with my disability!)

I have fibromyalgia and had a Nissan juke for this very reason (bit higher up) it fit my big buggy in just fine carrier on top of wheels and had isofix. I'm also on the hunt for another car now I'm expecting my second so also following this thread closely 😊

I went and sat in a few cars yesterday. I got very excited about a lovely Hyundai Kona, which on paper was ideal...but in reality the seats were far too low off the ground.
I've done some research online and the top contenders for high sitting positions in dmaller SUVs are the Ford Ecosport and the Suzuki Vitara (which I feel overall is a wee bit too big for me) so I am going to go and try sitting in an ecosport and possibly test drive today, as they do a 1l engine and a 1.5l engine. I've never considered a Ford before, but I really need something that meets my physical needs.

I love our Suzuki Vitara and don't feel it's big. They also have a reputation for being really good value second hand and also reliable. I looked at Which? and it got the best scores for reliability for a car of that size and price range.

Thank you, I have actually ended up purchasing a Ford Ecosport. The vitara was another 70cm in length and I think 10cm wider which obviously wouldn't have been a problem, but I am used to a tiny car so I felt more comfortable with the size of the ecosport.
