Missed miscarriage - MVA advice

Bellebg · 26/04/2024 16:08

We’ve just had our third early scan today - first NHS - to confirm a missed miscarriage. Both private scans suggested this was the case and NHS scan showed the same outcome but we have to have another scan in 7 days before they will allow any treatment, understandably.

Our hospital doesn’t offer MVA which I’d really like to progress with. Has anyone changed NHS hospitals or gone private for an MVA?

Thanks so much in advance. Really trying to work this out now as we’re getting married in two weeks and sadly will have to have the miscarriage the week before after our scan.

Feel like it’s such a horrific time and trying to have the miscarriage (as much as possible) before our wedding and honeymoon is making it harder x

@Bellebg so sorry for your loss. I think you can refer to any EPU for treatment (or get GP referral). Where in the country are you? I’ve had two MVAs and though they weren’t pleasant, I appreciated the speed they could do them and that I could ‘get on’ with my life after. I also wasn’t required to wait for another scan a week later for my MMC to be diagnosed.

I am also really sorry this is coming at such a hard time for you. My bleeding after my MVA was short lived and more like a light period with cramps.

If I can answer any questions let me know. X

@Bellebg I’m really sorry to hear about your loss 💐

I had a missed miscarriage in Feb this year. I had chosen surgical management and went to the EPU with this in my head, but when I got there they told me it wasn’t an option as the hospital lift had broken so they couldn’t get to and from theatre 🙄 anyway, I contacted a few places privately but never actually heard back although that might just be bad luck. What worked for me was I called my GP, explained what had happened and that I wanted surgical management and asked them to contact the other EPU in my area to see if they could do the procedure (I couldn't face doing it myself tbh). I was due to start a new job and psychologically felt surgery would be the best option for me. I was very lucky and the other EPU agreed to see me, I had a pre-op 2 days later and the surgery 2 days after that. Surgery went well for me, I was lucky to have minimal bleeding after and had a negative pregnancy test about 10 days post-surgery.

I hope you manage to find the support you need, and enjoy your wedding and honeymoon when the time comes!

Hello, so so sorry for your loss. I had a missed miscarriage (on the 17th april). Baby stopped growing at 11.5 wks. I didn't get offered the MVA but I did have the Medical management which was a Tablet given one day and 48hrs later more tablets. The baby/placenta and everything else was out within a few hours and bleeding has been alot lighter than my previous miscarriages which were all nearer 7wks. (We go abroad in 7 days so I also worried about bleeding etc but seems to be lighter after the Medical management). I told a nurse in EPU we were going abroad and she said to mention it to every nurse I spoke to just to ensure they kept things moving. I'd suggest calling EPU explaining you don't want to be in a foreign country having a miscarriage etc and they might offer the tablets? X

@Wise0wl thank you so much for sharing your experience. It’s so helpful and also quite reassuring. I’m in London - I’ve got an appointment with my GP to discuss this afternoon so hoping to get a referral to another EPU unit that offers MVA and get everything booked in as soon as I can.

I’m sorry that you’ve already been through this twice and hope you’ve had much brighter days since x

@gingerbiscuit24 thanks so much, I really appreciate it. It sounds like you had quite a difficult experience so I hope you’re as ok as you can be. Glad to hear the surgery went well and you had quite a quick negative pregnancy afterwards. That’s really what I’m looking for so it’s nice to hear your success story😊

I’ll definitely speak to my GP about it, sounds like the best way to get to the outcome.

Hope you’ve recovered as much as possible over the last couple of months x

@21RsMama ah I’m sorry to hear you’re in a similar situation. There’s so much to think about when you’re planning a trip or something and are trying to fit in timings of something that’s quite unpredictable. I hope that you’re feeling much better about your trip abroad and that your bleeding is manageable.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I probably would have considered medical management more originally if we weren’t getting married going away but it’s so good to hear how it was for you and that it was somewhat manageable.

Really hope you have a lovely trip and the time away makes you feel a little better x

Would they not do an EPRC?! Or is mva a new name for that? I’m surprised as I’ve known a lot of women to have it including myself.
I would ask them to refer you elsewhere. I was back to normal physically in a few days.

They advised against medical management at my hospital and not sure they even offered it but may depend what week you were.

ginny93 · 29/04/2024 12:28

Sorry to hear that @Bellebg I had a MMC last summer and transferred to another trust so I could have the MVA sooner. It was very straightforward- I phoned the new hospital to confirm that they offered it, their availability and whether they would accept a “transfer”, then my midwife handled everything from the original trust’s side.

Wise0wl · 29/04/2024 12:51

@Bellebg I’ve sent you a PM with some info about where I had mine in case that’s helpful. Wishing you luck.

gingerbiscuit24 · 01/05/2024 23:43

@Bellebg how did you get on?

Bellebg · 02/05/2024 12:18

@gingerbiscuit24 our scan is tomorrow so will let you know. Fingers crossed we can find the right option asap!

Just in case anyone comes back to this thread looking for MVA experiences, I had mine this afternoon and although I’d of course rather not have experienced it, on the whole it was really positive and so much better than I thought it would be. I’ve posted a thread called ‘a positive MVA experience’ if anyone wants more detail x
