Best avoided I would say.

LizzeyBenett · 25/04/2024 20:32

I wouldn't spray it if I wasn't pregnant let alone pregnant .

Peonies12 · 25/04/2024 20:33

I wouldn’t. I’ve been gardening throughout but wouldn’t use chemicals

Just don't. Especially if it's round up. Do you really want that stuff near a developing foetus?

MajorMischa · 25/04/2024 20:36

Ye gods no!

DeedlessIndeed · 25/04/2024 20:37

No, don't do it.

And remember, if you spray weed killer all of the wildlife. birds, local pets etc walking over that patch can also be affected.

Honestly, we know so much more about the wider impact of garden chemicals now, I wouldn't use them.

Thanks everyone, I will get my gloves.

Don't spray it, you'll inevitably inhale some and it's horribly toxic. Let the weeds grow or get someone to pull them out.

mitogoshi · 25/04/2024 20:46

I don't use weed killer it's toxic

Is boiling water effective? I haven't heard of that I've also got some wild grass growing in the patio, will boiling water work for that?
I'm just trying to save my back, dh works 6 days a week and isn't interested in the garden.

I wouldn’t spray a known carcinogen when pregnant same as I wouldn’t enter a room full of smokers. Chances are it would be ok the once, but why risk it. Weeds are not that bad! I have learned to love my dandelions.

parietal · 25/04/2024 21:10

boiling water is definitely worth a try

PuppetQueen · 25/04/2024 21:13

Try to avoid if possible. That said, if it's an accidental one-off exposure, I wouldn't worry too much, but if you're employed to spray weedkiller on a regular basis by the council, for example, I would ask to be transferred to desk duties for the rest of your pregnancy.

If it's something like applying weedkiller to your garden, please leave the weedkiller on the shelf and learn to love the diversity of plants in your garden! Or, try less harmful ways to kill weeds, such as salt (on weeds growing between paving slabs), boiling water, or ask your partner/friend to pull the weeds up manually.

wheredidthesungonow · 25/04/2024 21:16

Thank you. Is boiling water more effective or salt?

I personally think boiling water is best if you have quite a few weeds (if you use a lot of salt, it can damage surrounding structures and leach into the soil). The weeds will die back immediately with boiling water but it doesn't always kill the roots so if the weeds come back, treat them again straight away. Each application of boiling water will weaken the weeds and eventually they will die.

There is probably a small theoretical risk of paving slabs cracking, although this has never happened to me and I haven't heard of anybody else having this problem. But if your patio has tiles that might be delicate or expensive, maybe use water that is very hot but not quite boiling.
