Cyclizine not working?

I’ve been struggling with pregnancy sickness for about four weeks now, and I’m almost 11 weeks along. The doc prescribed Cyclizine 50mg and it doesn’t seem to be working. When do I start worrying about dehydration? I’m hoping it will subside in a week or so s otherwise I’ll need to tell my manager early as there is no chance I can be in the office with this!

I’m trying to eat at regular intervals and drink as much as possible but I’m really struggling

Any tips or alternative medicine options would be amazing

I had hyperemisis and had to beg for ondansetron. It stopped the vomiting but not the nausea. Can you ask for that?

An antisickness med should show clear benefits within 48hrs. If its been that long and no joy, call your GP back and ask for a different medication. There are absolutely loads you could try.

Thankyou that’s so helpful. First one I took, did nothing, second dose I felt fab and then since then no real change! Im not taking it regularly 3 x per day just in the afternoon / evening which is when I get sickness but I’ll call the doc to see if there is anything else!

You've got plenty more options luckily! Cyclizine is the first medication they always prescribe and then they can move you onto 2nd line medications x

Nejnej · 25/04/2024 18:21

One of my friends had more benefit taking it regularly, rather than just as and when? That may be worth trying whilst you're waiting for a GP appointment?

Battenbergsquare · 25/04/2024 18:21

I took cyclizine in the day and Promethazine at night. Was prescribed the latter during the day too as it supposedly lasts 12hrs but made me drowsy so I just took it at night after speaking with GP

beefmassaman · 25/04/2024 18:28

It likely doesn't apply to you, but worth ruling out.
I'm on pregnancy number 5 and have always been sick. I finally realised on pregnancy number 3 that it's reflux that's making me sick as opposed to common or garden morning sickness. Omeprazole fixed it with a top up of Nexium if needed.

It's not always easy to tell the difference between morning sickness and the symptoms of mild reflux. I feel queasy all day and was frequent my sick, but once I fixed the reflux I was fine.

awopbopaloobopawopbamboom · 25/04/2024 18:30

Take it regularly. I was taking it as hoc and it wasn't working, when I started taking the actual dose I found a massive massive improvement.

WeightoftheWorld · 25/04/2024 18:32

Yes definitely take it regularly. Might be worth trying that for two days then call the GP if still no joy.

Georgethecat1 · 25/04/2024 18:36

I would have a look at this website, you are currently on a first line medication which should
help within 3/4 days.

I would ask for Xonvea, its another first line medication and it’s worth trying other first line meds if you can. You need to take it regularly to get into your body before you feel sick. Definitely try adding in your morning dose

Keep an eye on your urine colour, anything dark you need to be checked out by the doctor, keep a note on how much weight you have lost (over 5% is classed as HG I think) and how much fluids you can keep down.

Don’t be fobbed off by the GP, read the website and get informed as some are rubbish and you really have to advocate for yourself.

If you go into second line meds like ondansetron these have a mild increase of cleft pallet 11 in 1000 to 14 in 1000 which isn’t massive but some GPs don’t like to prescribe for that reason.
