Anyone heard of someone who got toxoplasmosis?

I'm getting in a bit of a stew about some glove-less gardening I did at the weekend. Our flowerbeds have definitely got cat poo in them, and although I'm pretty sure I washed my hands, now I'm beginning to wonder. Not sure whether I did. Should I go to my doctor, or am I being neurotic?
Oh - and I'm 13 and a half weeks.

I think that this is what Frizbe's cousin had (unknown at the time), but they aren't sure how she got it, except poss from a rare steak.

I would think the chances are quite slim, but if it's worrying you then give your mw a ring and ask her advice.

Will link Friz to this thread in case she knows anything further.

Oh, and obviously make sure you wear gloves in future!

Don't worry, CSWS, I will DEF wear gloves in future! Thanks for your advice.

There was a thread recently about a rare steak and someone (not the OP) said she discovered a long time after the baby was born that she had toxo. Pretty unusual though. It was quite a busy thread. Try looking for steak and maybe it will show up!

Hi,

I was suspected of having toxo during my first pregnancy.

Toxoplasmosis will sometimes exibit flu like symptoms.

You should go to the doctor who can get you a blood test (may have to refer you to a consultant) to reveal weather you have already had it, currently have it or never have (think it was an IGC or IGG test). Treament is very important to avoid passing the infection on to the baby.

Always best to have your mind put at ease.

Agree with Bright and Shiny, don't want to worry you, but my cousin and her baby did get this and along with a botched birth by the hospital didn't do baby any favours and he died at 7 weeks It wasn't the toxo that polished him off, but they did say it contributed to him being blind and possibly to some brain damage. Cousin couldn't think where she had gotten it from except possibly some unwashed salad on holiday, but its a case of never knowing.

Jane - Try not to worry, one third of people have already had toxoplasmosis by the age of 30, affording them and their unborn babies protection.

Can't hurt to have the test though.

Ive jsu been tested for toxoplasmosis results still not in yet. I thin k it has an incubation period of 3/4 weeks so i am not sure how soon it would show up? the other consideration is if you do have a test and it is positive your options will be limited, as i understand it you cant be given anyteatment for it so would ahve a long wait to see if any complication occur as a result?
I was shocked how many places you can catch toxo from i dont think that is very well explained... we dont have cats and no one around us has cats so was surprised when the consultant still wanted to test me. the list she gave was enormous of ways to catch toxo.
Im sure however as long as you washed your hands well there should be minimal risk!

They can give you spyramyacin ?SP? to help prevent passing the infection on to the baby. I think they had to import it in from america for me.

I think I caught it from some undercooked meat which landed me in hospital at 11 weeks
I still don't know fully weather I had toxo in my pregnancy but had a lot of scans to check baby was ok.

Though a little small (4lb 9oz full term) she is in perfect health (dancing all over the front room to the wiggles)
