I'm on iron tablets and have had the same thing. I've been taking them with food, which has helped.

They can make people nauseous. I usually take them on an empty stomach but eat in the 20-30 minutes.

A well known side effect is that they make people constipated but this doesn't happen to everyone.

That is common. Its really just iron, we're not made to digest elements but to extract them from food containing them.

Try Spatone. It is iron rich water because it's flowed through iron rich mountains. There's research on pubmed that shows a lower dose is needed because it is more bio available.

It also has added vit c which helps with digestion.

I've been prescribed iron during both of my pregnancies, during my last pregnancy I had to stop taking them because they don't agree with me at all. The main side effect I experience is constipation, it is not pleasant!

Taking them with a glass of orange juice or a vitamin C tablet can help, and an hour before food or caffeine.

I got given some as part of a pregnancy trial (preemptively giving women iron from first midwife appointment to prevent low iron levels down the line) and quickly gave up on them because I felt the requirements were ridiculous:

  • Have them on an empty stomach and don't eat within 20-30 mins of taking them (only way to combat nausea in first trimester was to constantly snack)
  • Don't have them at the same time as other pills and multivitamins
  • Don't have tea within 30 mins of having them (but I love tea, one of the few pleasures that I still retained!)

I'd probably have been more inclined to continue taking them if I actually felt the need to take them, but my energy levels etc are fine.

yup, truly awful for the stomach. Spat one is a good shout but does depend on how low your levels are. Or wait until they get up a bit then maintain them with spatonr.
