Hi everyone,

I'm very newly pregnancy with no.2, and I have a history of losses. As a way to stay positive, I thought I'd ask a hopeful question! What did you all keep and reuse from your first baby, and what did you buy new and why?😀

We've kept almost everything because we knew we wanted a second fairly soon after. But I'm already thinking baby 2 should have the odd thing that's all their own!

Just new mattresses. My mum bought ds2 a toy as she said 'that poor child hasn't got a thing that's actually his' 😂

My youngest is 16 months old and I had kept everything from his older brother so did not need much. We got a new cot mattress, also first outfit and car seat.
Then after he was born bought a few things as we needed as he was a very different baby and what worked with my eldest often didn't with my youngest. Also got him the gifts he missed out on as everyone has been less bothered about a second boy in the family so he hasn't been giveb the sentimental things his brother got from family 😑
My youngest is also my last (ha, so they aren't getting the girl they want 🙃), so where with my eldest we got loads of clothes from other people that was too there taste, I have this time made a point of buying a few pieces that are to my and my families taste instead, as I see it as my last chance to do so.

I think only thing (other than some new clothes as a different sex) was a lightweight double buggy that could lie almost flat on one side. And a buggie board for my three wheeler (not very successful). A back baby carrier (I already had a baby bjorn). Didn't use that much though - really need two people to put it on properly.

I got a new mattress for the next to me crib. I got her a snuggly and a few new clothes (but I had a boy then a girl, although I reuse a lot of the clothes as pjs are pjs!

I got my DS to choose a special Teddy to give to his baby sister.

I kept everything as we knew we wanted another, like you.
We ended up getting a new few bits like babygrows and vests etc and got a lovely little cardigan for DC2 to leave the hospital in. We also needed a snowsuit as they were born in different seasons and summer born DD didn’t have one in the right size.
good luck with your pregnancy!

TribeofFfive · 27/04/2024 12:32

Oh, we got an extra seat for the pram! We chose our first pram as one which could convert to a double by using adapters.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 27/04/2024 12:35

A new mattress and a new walker because the one from my firstborn was secondhand and tatty, and I hadn't bought anything else.

Oh. And a few neutral baby grows as we hadn't found out the sex but I had another boy so I didn't buy any more.

Sage71 · 28/04/2024 13:02

Both of ours had their own coming home from hospital outfits which were then put into memory boxes. I sold my first pram on eBay and put the money towards a double as age gap was only 22 months. Some new babygrows as some of them had gone bobbly and new cot mattres.

paristotokyo · 28/04/2024 13:17

reused electric steam sterliser, next2me bed and some smaller sized baby grows and vests from previous dc. Unfortunately we moved house since each kid and couldn't find lots of things like the baby bouncer and play mat weirdly so needed to buy those again. Also would have reused our pram however that was lost on a flight(!) so had to buy a new one but bought much cheaper this time. Otherwise I've bought much less for second dc this time as I've realised how much they don't really need!

Two DD's and lots of older cousins, so not even our first didn't have much new tbh! Poor things, oh well, they honestly didn't notice. We never bought new mattresses for anything. All within our family, so gently used, and not necessary. I think buying a new mattress between siblings is terribly wasteful tbh.

It's to prevent SIDS and is recommended by the Lullaby Trust.

Congratulations!

For the baby, not too much, we bought a few new clothes so he could have something of his ie a coming home outfit and a couple of other bits I liked in the sale. It was more buying new for the toddler as baby would need the toddlers, like we bought a new car seat and single bed as baby would go into smaller car seat and the cot.

we also bought a better baby carrier and a double buggy, i’ve used it 3 times baby 2 is five months old, please really consider not buying one until baby 2 is here and you see how things go!

now we are buying more bits for baby as despite both being boys born in November they are very different sizes so baby 1 summer clothes are too small for baby 2!

Ilikepenguins · 29/04/2024 14:06

We got a snoo for number two which is a total game changer, although I lost weight quickly after number one on account of all the dancing I had to do to rock her to sleep at night. For number two I just place her in the magic crib and she goes to sleep touch wood.

I got new bottles and teats, a new steriliser (the previous one was secondhand and looking worse for wear) and a second diaper bag.

Congratulations and hope everything goes smoothly.

mustardrarebit · 29/04/2024 16:25

Reused everything. Dd1 didn't sleep in a cot/moses basket, barely used the pram as she was in a wrap or carrier most of the time. Same with 3rd daughter, the benefits of having 3 girls for the price of 1 😆 Second 2 are hand-me-down kids!
