baby measuring big

daughter is 36 weeks on thursday.. she is consistently being measured BIG by the midwife.

she had a growth scan at 32 weeks and baby was measuring as perfectly average for age etc.

she's since seen the midwife again, and again measured BIG, like massively off the centile chart!

so she has another growth scan tomorrow... which are they likely to go with?

Hi
by measured by midwife do you mean she has measured your stomach? These are very inaccurate as could be excess fluid etc, have you got an actual ultrasound booked in?

yes i mean with the tape measure... first reading put the baby on the 7th centile, the next on the 130th centile so a growth scan was booked in when she hit 32 weeks which also coincided with her scan for the placenta as she has an anterio placenta which was totally covering her cervix.

the growth scan put baby at the 'average for where he should be at 32 weeks'.. and the comment that 'lots of fluid'.

the next visit to the midwife and he's still measuring well over 130th... so they are sending her for another growth scan (this is also her 36 weeks mark)..

im assuming the scans have got to be the more accurate of the 2 measurements

I wouldn't worry. They told me my 2nd was going to be HUGE.

Baby 1 was 9lbs and they said #2 was measuring 10lbs plus. They scared the shit out of me.

He was 7lbs.

Hi
yes the scans are more accurate I had them all the way through due to high fluid. Because of the fluid the midwife didn’t measure me as it would give false inaccurate readings. If you are being booked in for regular scans she shouldn’t be measuring still

iateallthebiscuits · 22/04/2024 21:30

They may also test your daughter for gestational diabetes if the r baby is now measuring so much bigger.

yes that was done at 32 weeks... no GD... the measurement is with the tape measure thingy....

the scan she has had so far has baby measuring just right for his age if that makes sense

The midwife told me their measurements aren’t that reliable as they sometimes have to guess position of baby and it’s not an exact science. It’s just hands and a tape. Midwife said it’s the scan measurements that are accurate. Plus if you have a higher bmi it’s even more in accurate to just measure the bump. I wouldn’t worry.

shes had her 36 week scan and he's measuring at 5lb 8oz but on the percentile chart he's above 100%?

shes not overwight, has gained 2 stone during pregnancy, she is a 'lifter' as in gym and weights and she is still at the gym although taking it easier i believe.

she's got rolling pains now and has had them since last night.. baby apparently is well down too

Midwife didn't measure me because I have a scan booked for 32 weeks anyway and she said that is more accurate so I wouldn't worry too much.

Olika · 23/04/2024 12:48

I wouldn't worry about what the midwife is measuring. If the scans show he is ok size then I would go with those. Sounds like he could be out soon anyway. 🙂

according to her scan today she is 36 weeks and he's 5lb 8oz's (give or take 400g) apparently and according to good old gogle thats bang average.

but hes again been recorded on her centile sheet as over 100%.. this is the bit i don't understand.

shes not a petite girl, shes probably bang average, about 5ft 6 or 7, a normal weight etc

this is the bit i don't get... they have told her that she needs an ecg and has a consultant appointment in 2 weeks and if anything comes back on the ecg then they will induce her..

but she has a heart condition... ofcourse it will come back abnormal...??

my theory is, they know about the heart condition, and if he's not here in 2 weeks they will induce her anyway because they can prepare for any eventuality rather than on an emergency basis...

shes a wee bit tearful today bless her

I had lots of scans for an apparently massive baby and placenta previa. He was measuring 98th centile the whole way through and was born via c-section weighting a grand total of 5lb 13oz! Honestly the tape measure method is really a rough guide I was always measuring weeks ahead. He’s 9 months on on the 95th centile now howevever….

Is the appointment with a consultant in regards to the placenta placement perhaps more so than baby size? If it’s still covering the cervix they would perform a c-section instead. (Unless the 36 week scan showed it had moved out of the way)

placenta is confirmed to have completely moved... so thats no longer an issue!

they have done a scan and he's an average size baby according to the scan.. the results are being input onto her badger notes and the record is showing he's over the 100th centile?

this must be a mistake?

Hi
it can all be really confusing but I wouldn’t get too worried about percentiles etc I was scanned all the way through because my baby was small and he came out 8.1! If you have a copy of the scan paperwork it plots different percentiles for head, abdomen and femur, even a small discrepancy during the scan can throw them off, think how small a foetus femur bone is!

it sounds like she is getting good care from the hospital so she needs to just be led by that. I was told I would be induced at 38 weeks (due to high fluid) but when that time came the consultant decided he wanted me to carry on to full term, I went to 41+4 and then was induced. Things often change x

thank you, as it stands today... it would appear it was an error on her chart and he's now officially on the 50th centile which is where he would be expected to be.

she's carrying a lot of fluid and he's now well down.

i didnt add, she (DD) has a heart condition.. she is to have an ECG within the next two weeks, and if all is well, then they will leave her be.. but they would prefer her to be induced at 39 weeks.

shes not keen on this, but i've explained that if its a planned induction, any specialists that need to be there can be (heart etc)..
