Can you have a test for toxoplasmosis?

We're thinking about TTC again, and during my last pregnancy I was so worried about everything, especially the risk of toxoplasmosis as we have a cat, and although I wore gloves when changing littler tray, etc I still became really anxious and wouldn't even let the cat near me and became obsessional and slightly potty with washing food, etc!

I just wondered if its possible to test whether you've already had toxoplasmosis, in which case would be immune to it and wouldn't need to worry. It would just ease a lot of my anxiety and hopefully make my pregnancy less stressful!

Yes you can have blood test to see whether you had it. Ask your GP.

Is it something you have to pay for privately or can GP do it? I'm going tomorrow to have my IUD taken out [excited emoticon!!] so will ask then, athough my doctor is the grumpiest person I've ever met and virtually pushes you out of the room before you get a chance to ask any extra questions so I wanted to get the facts first!

Tell them that your HP/parents or some other close contact has just had it. Gps can be bolshy you just have to be firm with them and don't leave the room till you get what you want.

Yes it should be free. Ask for toxo Ig G level.

Hi,

I had one of these tests as we have 2 cats and was a bit concerned. I haven't had it and so DH is changing litter (a good excuse anyway). Am having a repeat test at 24 weeks not sure if this is normal but doctor said she would do it in case I had managed to contract it in the meantime(I'm not in the UK at the moment so not too sure of practice there as this is my first DC).

Main risk is if cats can go outside ours don't so should be little to worry about if you are in the same situation and haven't already had it.
