I haven't confirmed anything yet, I'm just so......ahhhh! Excited, nervous, confused, disbelief!

I just needed to voice it somewhere. And now I need to work out, what next? What do I do, who do I call? I also have type 1 diabetes so I tried to call my doctor straight away but of course it was out of hours so no response.

Congratulations :) with your Type 1 definitely let your GP know as you are planning to. Make sure you're taking folic acid daily. In lots of places you can self refer to your community midwife now. Other than that, there isn't a lot to do at this point other than wait! Best of luck.

My actual GP is worse than impossible to get ahold of but I guess that's where I need to start to get a confirmation. I don't want to just believe the test incase it's false. I am indeed taking the folic acid and I'll find out about the community midwife too, thanks!

You could do another test in a couple of days. General rule of thumb is you don't get false positives so if it's a solid line that came up within the time frame you can be sure it's real. There is no need for bloods etc to confirm. Sorry your GP is tough to get hold of, hope you get through soon.

It's a very very solid dark line that appeared in seconds before the control line even showed, shocked me because of how long we've been trying and how many negatives I've seen. I'm in disbelief for sure. Thanks so much for the responses!

I can understand the disbelief. I'm 7 weeks currently with my first natural conception in 6 years. We did have a daughter via IVF in 2021 but have had further unsuccessful fertility treatment since. Safe to say I've still not got my head round it!

I was just saying to a coworker how odd it would be because I'm waiting on an x-ray to see if my tubes are blocked which could explain part of the issue (the other part being I don't ovulate very often) I assumed at this point I wouldn't conceive naturally but it just goes to show that nothing is certain.

Congratulations! Do you attend a clinic at the hospital for your diabetes or is it all managed through the GP? I was advised to call my hospital's diabetes care line as soon as I had a positive test and then the specialist diabetes midwives did my booking appointment within a few days.

Referring to the community midwife might not be the right way to do it, although it probably varies from trust to trust. You'll need an HbA1C doing pretty quickly and then you should be offered a viability scan around 8 weeks, so that probably won't fit in with the normal community midwife time scales. But your diabetes doctor/GP should be able to advise you on the correct process for your area.

Congratulations again!

Also meant to say, you've mentioned above you're taking folic acid, but just wanted to mention that as you have diabetes you should be on 5mg daily, which you'll need to get on prescription if you aren't already taking that strength.

Thank you! I am taking the 5mg of folic acid, I was prescribed it when ttc originally but haven't been taking it much this year due to feeling hopeless about the infertility. However I started taking it a few days before I took the test out of instinct so I hope if I keep at it every day that it'll work out.

It is indeed a clinic at my hospital, I called and left an answering machine message, I'll call again tomorrow at lunch if I can since knowing my luck they'll call back while I'm working. I left a "ahh, please tell me what to do" message so I'm sure I'll get some support or guidance from there.

I'm so pleased for you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ yes phone the GP - they will be able to advise.

And look after yourself!

CaribouCarafe · 19/04/2024 13:15

Congrats OP! My GP didn't see me when I told them I was pregnant, just signed me up with the midwife. In fact I've never seen my GP, they're very good at fobbing me off...

SouthwestSis · 19/04/2024 13:26

If you're already taking the correct dose of folic acid then you don't need to see a GP, your pregnancy will be managed through the midwifery team.
Congrats on your positive test!

Aardbeien · 19/04/2024 16:37

Thank you everyone! I found an online self referral page so hopefully that's the ball rolling on this journey that I'm still in disbelief of. How exciting!
