Hi all
This is my first post
I’m 37 weeks and 6 days pregnant with my first baby and I’ve been bitten by insects. I have bites round my ankles and they are really itchy.
Without thinking I naturally reached for the Anthisan bite cream and have applied a thin layer once but now I’ve read that it shouldn’t be used in pregnancy!
please help - is this going to affect my baby at all
I’ve tried to contact Gp and pharmacist but they won’t advise on something that is safe to take to relieve the itch (it’s driving me crazy) and I can’t get through to the midwife either
ended up putting sudocream on the bites last night that did help

It's OK, it just hasn't be studied during pregnancy so they can't comment on it's safety. Various online pharmacies and sources say this. A few say it's been used without problems. It's very common for products to advise against use in pregnancy just because it hasn't been studied, as opposed to known safety concerns. Even the anti sickness medication I took (prescribed) said this. I wouldn't worry at all. Such a small amount would be absorbed anyway.

nothing you can buy over the counter will get through your skin and your placenta. And the cream's leaflet doesn't say you shouldn't use it? Everything says 'consult your Dr' because the companies want cover their arses.

Everything by default is "not safe for pregnancy" unless it's specifically been tested on pregnant women. Most companies don't want the hassle/risk of actually doing that so slap on the default don't use while pregnant to cover themselves.

The vast majority of the time the stuff is harmless even with that label so I really wouldn't worry yourself about it hurting the baby.

I wouldn’t worry about having used the cream but putting a spoon in boiling water and then on the bite can stop the itch.
