CVS Results in 2 days - what do they mean?

Just hoping someone can explain as I've been given an "all-clear" result but am a bit confused ... I'm 14 weeks pregnant this week with my 4th baby, and last week had a CVS. We chose to have the CVS due to my age and problems in one of my previous pregnancies (I've had an unexplained stillbirth), so we didn't have a nuchal scan beforehand (although while they were doing the CVS the doctor took the nuchal measurement anyway and it was 2mm).

We were expecting to wait 2 weeks for the result but got a phone call 2 days later to say everything was fine, they were able to give us an all-clear for Downs, Edwards and Pataus. We had assumed that they followed that up with the full 2 week test, but apparently its not necessary. I just wanted to know if that is definitely correct as I'm assuming from this that you can get a "false positive" from the 2 day result but not a "false negative". I know the CVS doesn't give a result for spina bifida, but is there anything we could be missing?

Yours with thanks (probably hopelessly paranoid, but sadly pregnancy has never been a happy and relaxed experience for me!) - paddycat.

Hi Paddycat

sorry you are having such a stressful time. I had an amnio this time and a CVS last time.

I am afraid that I can't explain why it is thought possible to have a false 'bad' result though not a false 'good' result. But, I would suggest that you get back in touch with the screening counselor at your hospital (who I assume you have been taking to)for a full explanation. I have dealt with a number of counselors at 2 hospitals and they have all been very helpful and knowledgeable.

At the very least this will give your question a brief bump!

Hi paddycat, when we had cvs we were told that if the initial 48-hour results(downs, edwards, patau and the sex cromosome) were normal there's at least 95 percent chance that that the rest are normal as well(probably the rest of the cromosomal abnormalities are so much more rare). Surely you get the full report after two weeks anyway?

Hi, thanks so much for your quick responses. My husband is going to ring the hospital to try and get more info, unfortunately he was so stressed when they rang with the result he wasn't in any fit state to ask them anything! We feel so lucky and so grateful to be having this baby, I guess we can't quite accept that everything might just be OK!

Thanks again - paddycat xx
