FHR 178bpm at 8+2… normal?

I went for a scan today and this was the heartbeat. The sonographer who was also a midwife was very happy with it and said it might well even get a bit faster than this.

Everything I read online says the average is a lot lower than this, usually top end of the ‘normal’ range is 160?

If you knew yours, what was it at a similar gestation?

I’m not an expert I’m afraid - and I’m sure if the sonography was happy with it then it’s absolutely fine. I remember when going for a scan at a similar point in my pregnancy that they said anything between 120 and 180bpm was perfectly normal, which means you’re in that bracket.

I've never been told the FHR and I had 4 scans in first trimester. Honestly, please do trust the professionals rather than Dr Google.

Yes this is normal.
The heart rate is faster the earlier you are. A low heart rate at this gestation is potentially a cause for concern.
My 8 weeker heart rate was 176.

I had a viability scan at 8+2 due to having had IVF. BPM was 186, which like you I panicked as this seemed extremely high compared to what I had read.
The midwife was happy with this and my beautiful boy is now 16 days old with no complications or issues throughout the pregnancy.

Thank you for this, really reassuring. Congratulations on your boy xxx
