Best stretch mark creams

Hi!
I am 5 weeks pregnant.
When is the best time to start creams to reduce the chance of stretch marks / hydrate the skin properly and do people have some brand recommendations?

Thank you

I used clarins tonic oil and the moisturiser from finding out I was pregnant. I was HUGE and have 0 stretch marks

Mama mio oil- massage twice a day- no stretch marks. I have a feeling they’re hereditary though? You’ll either get them or you won’t, but can’t hurt to try! I wore a belly band, but they don’t seem as popular now.

Bio oil. Start whenever you want

LadyWhitwell · 11/04/2024 04:42

I used bio oil and it seemed to work well. However I was overdue and got stretch marks in week 42.

bb192 · 11/04/2024 05:51

I used coconut oil and didn't have any stretch marks but I was told by a dermatologist that you can't really stop stretch marks at all and it's just down to genetics. Still I used it from the start as I just liked having that moment looking after my bump.

DuploTrain · 11/04/2024 05:56

I didn’t use anything and didn’t have any in two pregnancies. It’s down to genetics and luck so there’s not much you can do about it. Hopefully you won’t have any.

BusterGonad · 11/04/2024 06:00

I used Palmers Coco butter. I had no pregnancy stretch marks but I had a tiny bump.

SlipperyLizard · 11/04/2024 06:08

You can’t do anything to stop stretch marks, they form in a layer of skin that no cream can reach/affect.

I have horrendous stretch marks on my legs from puberty, but didn’t get any from two pregnancies.

gestroopd · 11/04/2024 06:10

I had none in my first despite having them in puberty and used various oils every day. Got to 38 weeks and the skin on my belly just started splitting. Baby came at 42 weeks and stomach full of big deep ones.

Putting oil on was really lovely, I can remember looking down at my oiled round belly. But it didn't help at all! My best advice would be to not get overdue!

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 11/04/2024 06:11

I used more potions and lotions but unfortunately (wasn't unfortunate really he's fabulous!) I grew a bump akin to the Goodyear Blimp and got stretch marks like a week old balloon!

SquashPenguin · 11/04/2024 06:34

Stretch marks are genetic so not a huge amount you can do. I got to 31 weeks with none and thought how great all the Bio Oil was doing, woke up the next day covered in them and getting progressively worse.

I was 41+5 and didn’t have any, I do think it’s genetics as my mum and aunts don’t have any either

Geebray · 11/04/2024 16:22

None of the creams or oils work. Stretch marks are within the structure of the skin, the collagen and elastin.

You'll either get them, or you won't. Sorry OP!

Flopsy145 · 11/04/2024 23:16

They are largely hereditary, especially the deep ones. My mum didn't have them with me so I don't know if I would have had them badly anyway but I used the Palmer's cocoa butter for stretch marks, once a day after shower started from about 12 weeks!

ttcveryeaely · 11/04/2024 23:20

Yes I was aware it's mostly luck - but was wondering if there were some creams that can help them - reduce them.

No OP, there aren't.

My mother and GM didn't have stretchmarks. I didn't use any creams, and I didn't get any stretchmarks. Your cream didn't do anything. It's genetic.

I have a friend who has stretchmarks on her thighs from growing, she got them in pregnancy too although she slathered herself in Bio oil.

LavenderSweetPea · 12/04/2024 14:22

I think the best thing you can do to avoid stretch marks is to eat sensibly in pregnancy, no eating for two! If you only gain a sensible amount of pregnancy weight, there'll be less excess to stretch your skin.

Prettypennies · 12/04/2024 15:16

Like a pp said, I had none at about 39/40 weeks, went 2 weeks overdue and they appeared overnight! I didn’t realise how deep they were at the bottom of my bump until I was post partum.

Blue2020 · 12/04/2024 15:54

I didn’t get any but I also had ds at 35 weeks. That said a friend got them from 26 weeks. My mum has them so I guess I only skipped it due to having ds early.

Suchardchoccy · 12/04/2024 15:57

Apparently you can't prevent them. This is DC3 and, like a pp said, I like to use bio oil most nights just to have that moment of looking after my bump 😊 the skin gets tight and dry so giving it moisture will definitely help, I would suggest your fave moisturiser

LizzeyBenett · 12/04/2024 16:55

I've been using oils and creams twice a day 30 weeks now and still have stretch marks think your either prone to them or not oils can only do so much . Used clarins and mama mio .

Geebray · 12/04/2024 17:03

Selling creams for stretch marks is such a money-making scam.
