Blood thinning injections before c-section

I recently posted about breastfeeding and had such helpful and encouraging replies, I'm hoping you can help me here too.

I'm scheduled to have a c-section in just over 2 weeks and have been asked to collect some blood thinning ejections and start taking them once daily from now, and for 6 weeks after the surgery too.

I've heard about them after but not up until the surgery. Has anyone else on here had to do this?

They said as my mother has had a blood clot I'm at high risk but from what I can find on Google its normally after the surgery.
I'm probably just stressing as really nervous about a section xx

I was on blood thinners in all pregnancies and after. For my c section I was told to stop them 24 hours before and then restart after.

Yes, I had them from a positive test until 12 weeks after delivery. Stopped 24 hours before section and was back on 6 or 12 hours later. I have sticky blood.

Thank you! I'm 37 weeks and it's the first I've heard of needing them. I'm waiting for someone to show me how to inject them now.

Bevel side up! Hurts less.

It makes sense that you’ve been asked to take them before birth if you at at higher risk of clotting. To stop us bleeding to death in labour there’s a biological mechanism where the body increases clotting. This starts as soon as we are pregnant but ramps up in the last few weeks as due date approaches. It’s a really clever function but if you are already at risk of clotting you need thinners to dampen it down. This is just a bit of extra protection for baby and you in the last few weeks, and then for you in the weeks after. You will be finished with the stings in no time. Not long until your lovely baby is here! x

I used to pop an ice cube on my tummy before the injection. You will be terrified of the first few and then it'll become second nature. Prepare for mad looking bruises too!

It meant that my babies didn't cry at their first injections because I was so so calm about injections! They formed their own opinions about it by the second and third rounds...

I used Clexane twice a day from a positive pregnancy test until 6 weeks post c-section with my little boy. I had a blood clot in my lungs 5 years ago so I’m on blood thinners for life, but back to Riveroxeban now which is the oral form. The Clexane doesn’t cross the placenta which is why injection form is needed! It can sting a little bit but you soon get use to it. They will tell you to inject in your lower abdomen or top of your thighs, what ever works easier for you. It’s really important to take at the same everyday as well.

Me too! By the due date my other children were asking if the baby was trying to kick its way out due to all the bruising.
