Gender mistake at 20 week scan

Hi has anyone ever experienced it. I've been told boy at 13 week scan and just found out it's a girl at 20 week scan.

13 weeks is very early for gender.

I wouldn't trust anything under 16 weeks.

MiltonNorthern · 05/04/2024 09:32

More likely to be correct at the 20 week scan. Was the 13 week a private sex scan? The NHS don't usually state a sex at that appointment I don't think as it's so likely to be wrong.

WhiteLeopard · 05/04/2024 09:33

I only know one person who's been told the wrong sex, and that was at the 13 week scan. The 20 week one is much more accurate (though can occasionally be wrong).

Justbrowsing2024 · 05/04/2024 09:34

I think 20 week scan is more accurate. I know people this happened to yes. Some had early scan others had the blood test

Axx · 05/04/2024 09:36

I've heard of early scans being wrong.

Prinnny · 05/04/2024 09:41

I think this is why they’re not supposed to tell you the sex at 13 weeks, I’ve never heard it done that early actually it was 16w minimum when I had DD.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 05/04/2024 09:48

It's sex, not gender. And you can't reliably tell on a scan at 13 weeks, I don't know why you were told or believed that. It's never guaranteed - why not just wait - it doesn't matter.

PixieTrance89 · 05/04/2024 10:37

The 20 week scan is more accurate

LizardOfOz · 05/04/2024 10:38

The genitals look pretty much the same up until 16? weeks

Causewerethespecialtwo · 05/04/2024 10:39

This is why they recommend that the gender can’t reliably be seen until 16+ weeks.

Daffodilsarentfluffy · 05/04/2024 10:39

Scans at 20, 28 and 32 weeks told me a girl..
A very well endowed ds arrived.. Was 20 years ago so hopefully things don't go so 'wrong' these days.
20wk NHS scans should be more accurate now.

dishymyfishy · 05/04/2024 10:46

I only know one person which was a friend of my sister's. They were told one sex and the baby was born the other sex. There was a lot of confusion in the delivery room because of it. I think now that you can book your own private scan relatively easily means you can always double check. The 20 week scan is most likely accurate compared to the 13 week scan.

If you want to know for sure I would pay for a private scan. Both of mine were very clearly boys but they did manage to get a really good angle to capture that, ie from underneath, legs open and penis and testicles very obvious. With Ds1 she said I mean we cannot be 100% certain and then he opened his legs which had her laughing because it was very clear and with Ds2 she said can you tell what it is? Again clear.

Sha1234 · 05/04/2024 11:05

Thank you everyone. The baby had her legs crossed all through the scan but the sonogrpher told me she can see three lines so it's a girl this makes me doubt it.

I know someone who was told boy early on, and then at the 20 week scan they found out the baby was a girl.

WittiestUsernameEver · 05/04/2024 11:11

Who told you what sex the baby was a t 13 weeks?

WittiestUsernameEver · 05/04/2024 11:15

I'm surprised about how much you doubt the sonographers ability to sex a baby. They've done this way more than you have... They know what they're doing.

Why do you think you know better? Just because the babies legs were crossed? Why would you doubt them?

The only reason you're perhaps questioning it, is because you went somewhere that sexed the baby at a ridiculously early point. They won't be as accurate because it's really hard to tell. Which is why normal 12 week scans don't look for sex.

Sha1234 · 05/04/2024 11:18

Okay why you are angry 😂😂😂😂

CormorantStrikesBack · 05/04/2024 11:24

I know 2 different couples who were told boy at the 20 week scan and turned out to be a girl. So it does happen.

WittiestUsernameEver · 05/04/2024 12:29

Why are you so adamant that the sonographer was wrong??

Sha1234 · 05/04/2024 12:35

I'm not. Just asked because I noticed the baby had the legs crossed and the fact that in my report it's been mentioned limited view due to the baby position. I asked others should I trust this scan 100% or anyone had an experience of sex mistake. That's it

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 05/04/2024 12:37

I wouldn't believe the scan at 13 weeks. That's very early to try work it out.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/04/2024 12:40

My friend was told twice she was having a girl at late scans. She has two sons. I never bothered finding out the sex when I was pregnant because it's not 100% accurate.

gertrudemortimer · 05/04/2024 13:03

It's never going to be 100% I had loads of scans and they never picked up my son was missing a complete kidney ureter etc. my friend who is a sonographer said sometimes the bowel can look like a kidney. My son also had hypospadias which was never picked up (more understandable) but that can sometimes make a penis look like a vagina on scans due to where the urethra is located. I didn't find out the sex of my son and I wouldn't change that if I was to be pregnant again either.

excitedmama2be · 05/04/2024 13:04

Also remember nhs scans they will never say 100% the gender of the baby because it’s not the purpose of the scan , remember it’s anomaly scan and not a gender scan . So they only tend to look for gender if they have time after they have checked for 10-11 conditions and even then they will say verbally and that they aren’t 100% percent

NCfor24 · 05/04/2024 13:06

My 20 week scan said girl.
I gave birth to a boy.
