Constant nausea

I’m about 7w pregnant (not exactly sure as my dates didn’t match up to the EPU scan and I’m being rescanned tomorrow so hopefully will know more). I started feeling nauseous last Tuesday and it’s got progressively worse to the point that I feel sick from the moment I wake up. I have only actually vomited twice but several times a day I am heaving violently over the toilet. My ribs are bruised and my head constantly hurts from this. Today I’ve had horrendous stomach cramps like when you have a sickness bug. I am still able to eat and I am doing so regularly to try and stave the nausea off but it’s really really got me down.

I have a DS2 and I’m relying on a disgusting amount of screen time to get me through the days while DP is at work. I haven’t been able to leave the house for 3 days as the nausea is so bad. It peaks when I walk up the stairs but any movement seems to set it off. I had morning (and evening) sickness with DS but nothing like this. I’d feel nauseous, throw up and then be ok for most of the day. The evenings were worse but nowhere near as bad as this.

A friend suggested asking the GP for anti-sickness meds but will they give them when I’m hardly actually vomiting? Could it be HG without vomiting?

Literally any advice is most welcome.

It's horrible isn't it? Definitely worth asking the GP, they may be able to prescribe something. It sounds like normal pregnancy sickness to me but I'm no expert - the GP/midwives will have more of an idea!

Maybe it is normal.. it’s just totally debilitating. I had sickness for 16 weeks in my first pregnancy but still worked FT, went out with friends etc. If I wasn’t on annual leave already, there is no way I would be able to go to work this week. It seems severe to me but maybe I’m just not dealing with it well.

It's not unusual to need some time off work, the GP can sign you off if required. I had 4 weeks off with my first and 3 weeks off with my second. Definitely wasn't going out with friends! It started getting better at about 12 weeks for me. Although second time the exhaustion improved more after they gave me iron tablets - they took bloods at 9 weeks but didn't check the results until the 16 week appointment, when they said "Oh your iron reading is a bit low".

My cousin had HG and was throwing up 7 times a day and ended up in hospital a couple of times with dehydration (just couldn't keep anything down), so that's my reference point for HG but it might cover more of a range than I think.

This was my experience too. I don't think it would be classified as HG if you're not vomiting - presumably you're keeping food and fluid down, even if your intake isn't great and very restricted in terms of what you can eat? Definitely speak with the GP, cyclizine and other anti-emetics can help with nausea. Sucking boiled sweets constantly was the only thing that helped me really. Pregnant with number 2 currently and sickness has stated already at 5 weeks on/off, but mild so far. I think mine got really bad from 7 weeks ish last time and eased off around 14. Totally gone by 16. Take care.

Yes, I would get to the doctors if I were you. This was just like me until week 17, both pregnancies. I was rarely sick but extreme nausea day in day out with no let up. I couldn't sit up right for a lot of the time, it made the nausea worse. Signed off for what must have been about 8 weeks. Was tried on three different medicines before one worked enough to take the edge off. Such a relief.

Sorry you're experiencing nausea OP it's the worst! I'm 10 weeks and my experience sounds very similar to yours. Child care of DS is very challenging and I feel sick alllll the time. I've been signed off work by GP and been on cyclizine since week 7 which definitely has taken the edge off a bit. Initially my GP tried to say it's a normal part of pregnancy, so I had to be very clear about the impact on my daily life, i.e. I can't work or look after my toddler. Not all GPs will need convincing, but just to be prepared.
I think it's really normal to think should I just put up with it if you're not actually vomiting but constant nausea is incredibly debilitating. You don't have to suffer.

I was 6 weeks pregnant and diagnosed with mild Hg , all symptoms , dry retching , gagging , not much vomiting

slowly weening myself off it at 23 weeks now

Thank you all for your replies. I cannot tell you what a difference it makes to speak to people who’ve been through it/ are going through it. I’ve submitted an online request to my GP so I’ll hopefully get to speak to someone soon.
@Hopingrae I think that’s exactly it - I’m not vomiting much so feel a bit silly saying I’m not coping but this is really stopping me from doing my normal day to day activities. Thank you and I hope you get some respite soon.

Don't feel silly, sometimes the nausea feels worse than the vomiting...

BatildaB · 04/04/2024 21:24

I am experiencing similar at 6 weeks. I have (barely) thrown up twice. But for the past few days I’ve felt so disgusting all day. It’s like a constant hangover where you’re still slightly drunk so the room almost spins every time you move. I have to psych myself up to eat because it is such a revolting thought but then when i take the first mouthful it’s often amazing. I sometimes have about half an hour of feeling almost normal after food, but then it creeps back in. By the evening it’s so bad that if no one else is around I end up having a self pitying cry. I feel like I should be counting my blessings as i wfh and i’m not actually throwing up but it all just feels completely unmanageable. I spoke to my dr today and she’s prescribing me something, not sure what and am a bit scared to take anything... i’ve been taking b6 and I think that helps but I’m worried that different places give different recommendations so I don’t know if i’m taking too much.

snaily20 · 04/04/2024 22:34

I am also around 7 weeks and feeling almost exactly the same.

i almost wish I could be sick to relieve the nausea somewhat as feeling sick all day is debilitating.

i have no advice but wanted to comment to let you know you aren’t alone, I don’t remember it being this horrid the first time round either - but as that was 4 years ago I may just have forgotten 🫠

annlee3817 · 04/04/2024 23:11

Definitely call the GP, I had the same in my second pregnancy and wish I knew that I could have got some tablets to help, I just wanted to cry because I felt so sick, but like you only vomited a few times, it lasted until around 14 weeks and then eased off thankfully. I didn't have any symptoms at all with DD1, so wasn't expecting it at all. Jacobs high fibre cream crackers helped a little, nibbled on them through the day, also used travel sickness bands and ginger sweets. They helped a tiny bit
