Aversion to ALL food!!!

I’m eating probably 50% of my usual daily intake of calories. Ie today I have managed

One weetabix with milk
1/4 can of soup and slice of bread
Fruit smoothie
Nandos peri salted chips and maybe two bites of the burger I got

Problem is, the idea of ALL of them (except the smoothie) is now making me want to be violently sick. I can’t open the fridge without wanting to vomit. The smell of food really sends me over the edge, even in supermarkets or if I walk outside and I can smell a neighbour’s dinner cooking.

I am not nauseous if I’m not thinking of food, but if I am then it can be so bad that I can be dry heaving. I wouldn’t be surprised if it evolves to sickness, as I’m just 7 weeks.
Plain water and plain carbs are almost worse than something with a flavour.

Grateful to be pregnant and hoping symptoms are a great sign!

Just don’t know how I can manage this symptom. Does anyone have any advice?

I lived on cereal the first few months. Trust me, for 90% of us the 'healthy and balanced' diet gets thrown out the window in those early months.

Couldn't walk down some ilses in the supermarket because the image of some foods turned my stomach.

I'm at 8 months now and it's well passed so just hang in there 😊😊

I felt like this in all 4 of my pregnancies and it's so rough! I'd literally heave at the smell of the fridge. Like another poster, a few times I was in the supermarket and would have to try and stop myself from vomiting. It's rough!

I found that if I let myself get too hungry then it would be a lot worse. Strong flavours were a no too. I'm afraid it lasted until 12, 16 and 20 weeks for me 🙈

Relate so much to this. I was utterly disgusted by all foods and almost phobic of water. I survived on sprite, bagels and baked potatoes with butter until about 20 weeks. Didn’t truly get any sort of appetite back until 28 weeks.

My only advice is just eat whatever you can face. All good intentions of maintaining a healthy diet went out the window (Lord I couldn’t even dream of taking an antenatal vitamin). I just accepted survival mode. I lost a fair bit of weight initially but baby seems to be thriving so that’s all good with me.

Try and identify safe foods and make sure you always have them to hand…just be warned they can become unsafe at any given moment 😷 for me it was plain salty foods but everyone is so different.

Good luck, I think most people find it passes by around 12 weeks so hopefully you are well on your way out of the trenches!

Just to add it’s quite wonderful when you get your appetite back and the food aversions go. I will quite happily make up for lost time over the next ten weeks!

You’re completely normal! I’m 15 weeks now and still sick quite a bit (although being on cyclizine has helped) but for the first few weeks the thought of food was awful, literally it all was like ash to me. The smell of food was a huge trigger (as was the smell of cleaning products 🤷‍♀️) but also just thinking about food made it worse. I found I was able to eat more if I didn’t think about what I was eating at all - my husband was great and did all the cooking, and I made him not tell me what we were having and literally just put it in front of me, and I found I could eat some of it then. I also had a huge array of different snacks (fruit, crisps, nuts, sweets, yoghurts) that I used to keep on top of the nausea. Dh got used to cooking with all the windows open to keep smells to a minimum. I pretty much boycotted the kitchen for weeks.

It is horribly intense for those first few weeks, but it does get better. I’m not out of the woods yet (definitely going to be sick this morning, just not sure when yet) but the intensity of it fades and there have been a few breakthroughs where I’ve actually enjoyed some food recently!

@Lillers ohhh was exactly the same! If food was in front of me I could eat it but the thought of food was torture. So very strange 🤣

I had hyperemesis in my first pregnancy so was a pro at managing feelings of sickness with my second. You need to find a couple of things that are low GI that don't make you heave (so you don't get hungry or have low blood sugar which can set the sickness feeling off. But also dont eat high sugar things as you also end up feeling sick once you crash..just keep things steady). I ended up living off granary toast, baked beans and a poached egg if I was feeling up to it. Oatcakes and milk before bed so you don't get hungry and feel sick at night. Don't ever get hungry!! 😆 It did last the whole pregnancy both times for me annoyingly but the second time I was much better at managing it.

And both my babies were fine despite not the greatest variety in my diet!
