Morning Sickness

My morning sickness has kicked off majorly. I am 8 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy that has made it to this point. Does anyone have any tips for how to deal with it?

Plain Rich Tea biscuits seem to be the only thing I can actually eat without bringing back up, but I was wondering if anyone had good ideas on how to reduce the nausea?

I am trying out Sea Bands to see if they help, as I hear they can take the edge off, but any tips are much appreciated!

I was put on cyclizine at 6 weeks
slowly weaning down at 22 weeks

Sea bands really did take the edge of morning sickness for me. I was still sick but the nausea was easier to cope with. I was sick from 7- 12 weeks, not much help but you do learn your triggers the hard way, I ended up just eating rice, chicken nuggets, and Coca Cola when I could. Not the best for a child but you do just have to survive and so would say don't be to hard on yourself! And also chocolate would bring on nausea Confused

Medication is the only thing that works IME. I am almost 9 weeks and have been super nauseous since 6 weeks. I find fatigue aggravates the sickness hugely. Also letting my stomach get empty - so I'm constantly grazing bland foods plus some berries for vitamins.

Baby is a parasite so will get all the nutrients it needs from your bones is necessary! So just do whatever you need to survive. Best of luck x

Yeah it’s hard to get stuff to stay down.

The Rich Tea have started coming up. I tried toast, but that came back up. I can’t even keep water or flat lemonade down.

The retching is killing me. It’s so painful.

This sounds more like HG than regular morning sickness. 8 weeks - 10 weeks was absolute hell on earth for me. I’m 15 weeks now and much better only have the odd day of being sick and nausea. Anti sickness medication can help there are a number you can try as well as combinations together although nothing worked for me. If you can’t keep water down for more than 24 hours then you’ll need to go get IV fluids at a&e or call the EPU at your hospital to see if they offer this as then you won’t have to wait hours. Plus you’ll feel better for a while after being rehydrated. Chewing gum and soda water were the only things that helped in those early days. You have my sympathy as I remember how awful I felt at 8 weeks but it does get easier I promise.

Speak to your GP about getting medication, especially if you can’t keep liquids down. I didn’t go to the GP until I was 10 weeks and really don’t know why I waited so long as I was sick from 5 weeks. I’m nearly 15 weeks now and with cyclizine the nausea is bearable and I’m only sick a couple of times a week.

Before I went to the doctor I used sea bands which helped take the edge off for a few weeks, but then they stopped working for me. Ginger biscuits by the bed helped a little but not hugely. My go-to meal was pasta in pasata sauce - sometimes dh would put a few finely chopped vegetables in it for me for nutrition.

Oh and the little packs of sliced apples you can get were amazing for me, recommended by my pregnant friend. For some reason they tasted so much better than whole apples 🤷‍♀️

Thanks so much guys.
I’ve managed to keep some Lucozade down, and a plain TUC cracker. I might fill out a consultation with my Doctor online, and see what they recommend / if they can recommend anything.

Speaking to GP is a good shout! Like some other PPs, I've been on cyclizine since week 7 and it definitely makes the nausea more bearable and I can eat. I didn't call GP with my DS and thought I won't make the same mistake again!! It's just the worst. Meds can take a little bit of getting used to, it took over a week to get through the foggy head stage of cyclizine but now it's fine.

I ended up on cyclizine as I struggled in 1st trimester and it helped massively. If you aren't coping, contact your GP x

Thanks guys ☺️
I’m gonna see how tomorrow goes, and if it’s just as bad, I might need to speak to the GP.

Just to add, depending on your GP you might need to push a bit like I had to. As I wasn't vomiting much it was initially passed off as "just a part of pregnancy"... this absolutely does not have to be the case, it was affecting my ability to go to work and look after my toddler and generally function. Once I clearly outlined the impact on my daily life the GP did agree to prescribe meds!

MG1614 · 01/04/2024 19:35

The sea sickness bands took the edge off a tiny bi. Other than that sucking boiled sweets continuously was the only thing that really helped me. 5 weeks with second pregnancy now and the sickness has started already. I'm sure I made it to 6 weeks last time before it kicked in so don't think this bodes well. Definitely speak to your GP tomorrow.

Oh yes that is a good point - it took me a few days to get used to Cyclizine as well, and actually I had to lower the dose I was taking because it was keeping me awake at night and giving me shivers (like when you have the flu). So instead of 3 times a day I only take 1 tablet in the mornings. It also took me a while to work out when to take it - it says you can take it with or without food, but if I take it without food then I am completely knocked out within an hour. Not ideal at work 😂

Negangirlxx · 01/04/2024 21:04

I really do appreciate all the help guys!
Thank you! ☺️

Milk used to make mine worse for some reason, tea and cereal were a no go. Apples used to help settle my stomach for some reason.
