It's 20 years since I had my daughter.... There are so many new products!! Baby Nest Pods...... This may sound stupid but what are they for?! Like where does the baby lie in it? Lol are they worth it? The Sleeping bags weren't even around back in my daughter's day either but I see they are good but not straight away when newborn??

I suppose companies sell them for money and that's the answer.

A lot of baby gear is overrated today but new parents seem to be happy to spend more money than a few years back.

SIDS charities and many health professionals advise against the use of these products.

I would strongly recommend you find a reliable source as now there are countless products available but are not safe.

Pods/nests aren't recommended for unsupervised sleep

MeinKraft · 29/03/2024 21:59

You put the nest in the cot, they make the baby feel like they're being cuddled, all safe and cosy. Afaik there haven't been any incidents of SIDS whilst using the nests, it's that the Lullaby trust doesn't deviate from their advice of a clear cot - although it's been a few years since I read about all this so that may have changed.

Hi
I bought an expensive nest/pod as I assumed baby could sleep in it but this isn’t the case. Massive waste of money and my DS hated it even for supervised naps!

NoCloudsAllowed · 29/03/2024 22:02

I think back in the day, people put a rolled towel under a cot sheet to make the baby feel cosy and enclosed. Especially if it's a small baby in a big cot. It's basically the same thing.

Sleep deprived parents will fork out for anything that might help with sleep! We got a secondhand one, never used it in the cot but used it when baby was sleeping and I was sitting nearby, or when awake but wanted to put baby down so I'd have hands free.

TheOneWithUnagi · 29/03/2024 22:05

They are not recommended for sleep - sleepyhead changed its name to dock-a-tot as even they now say that they shouldn't be used for sleeping. I wouldn't waste your money on one, not needed.

Fab glad I asked thanks everyone!!!! I did wonder what they really were for!! 🙈

Hi OP I was in a similar boat 15 years between my 2 and by god have things changed. I have a babymoov cosydream that my daughter loves and HV approved of for sleeping as it's completely flat/ doesn't have sides like a traditional sleepyhead it hugs their bum and holds them in place. Also love my next2me and I've used a sleeping bag on DD since she came home from hospital at 4lbs I just bought one for her size.

mitogoshi · 29/03/2024 22:40

There are so many more things available for gullible new parents to buy compared to 22 years ago when my dd was born. None of these are necessary despite the marketing material and some inevitably in the future will fall out of favour.

Use your judgement on these, ideally try before you buy etc. I certainly don't understand the sleeping bag thing, mine slept with a blanket between us.

PickledScrump · 29/03/2024 22:46

You can use sleeping bags straight away. Different ones have different minimum guidelines, some are by weight some by height. But I believe the smallest start from 5.5lb. Just make sure they have poppers under the arms so baby can’t wiggle down.

I'm getting a next 2 me bedside crib! 🥰

Both of my girls loved their sleeping bags. One liked her arms tucked in like she was swaddled and one liked her arms out and free!

I highly recommend having a look at the lullaby trust for advice on products, I found them really helpful
