What does a newborn sleep in?

Currently due my first baby at the beginning of June and I’m worrying about what to put my baby in to sleep!

I don’t like the idea of swaddling, I’ve read that blankets are a SIDS risk and sleep sacks aren’t suitable until she’s 8.8lbs so I’m not sure what options that leaves me! Especially as the English weather in that time of year could be cold, warm or anything in between 😅

What did you use for your newborn? She’ll sleep in either a Moses basket downstairs or we have a snuzpod for her upstairs too.

We used blankets for a couple of weeks unfil he was heavy enough for a sleeping bag. I didn't get the hang of swaddling, but I think I'll give it another go this time around. Babies like being restricted like that - reminds them of being in the womb.

Only until heavy enough for sleeping bags though.

I'm due DC3 in June and I'm wondering the same (DC1 was October and DC2 was February) June can be roasting in the UK so I'm worrying about what to put her to sleep in.

For the first few weeks I've always used a cellular blanket tucked into the mattress, feet at the bottom of the cot and blanket under armpits. But it's a nightmare and still a worry so it's a relief to finally be able to put them in a sleeping bag - DC2 still uses one and she's 13 months!

Obviously we don't want our June babies to be cold but also don't want them to overheat because of SIDS 😫 I suppose it will make more sense when the time comes

You can get very thin sleeping bags. One of mine was born in a hot July, I used to put him to sleep in a vest with a single layer cotton cellular blanket when he was tiny and it was boiling. Luckily he liked the cot and it was my winter baby who wouldn’t be put down!

We used a love to dream swaddle bag and it really helped DS sleep better as he wasn't startling himself awake but could move his legs. You can get different types depending on the season/room temp and they have guidance on what to wear based on the room temp. They are expensive but really worked for us

There are sleep sacks you can use from birth, the GroSwaddle by Tommee Tippee. The arms can be popped open or closed. I use them open as I don’t like swaddling either. suitable from birth, from 7lbs.

you will likely want 1 tog for June I’d think.

i got one from Tesco, for club card price, in a baby event at the end of last year. The others I picked up from Vinted second hand, barely used. I just hot washed them. I can’t even tell which one I got from vinted and which I got from Tesco now!

Swaddling your new baby helps them feel safe, snug and secure, just like when they were in mum’s tummy. With this easy-to-use Swaddlebag you can use the poppers on the armholes to either swaddle your baby with arms in for total snugness or arms out to...

We used the Tommee Tippee Gro Snuggle. Suitable from newborn and has the option of swaddling the arms in or using it as a conventional sleeping bag so all basis covered as you won’t know baby’s preference until they’re here- they could have a strong startle reflex or you might find they’re a thumb sucker. It comes in a mix of togs too. For a summer baby I’d get mostly 1 togs plus a couple of 0.2s for heatwaves.

We used sleeping bags from the start. We used the Tommee Tippee newborn bags, then the Love to Dream ones (massive help with an overactive moro reflex), then moved back to Tomme Tippee sleeping bags until they're nearly 3. No danger of a sleeping bag being kicked off, so much more settled nights in my experience. We tried blankets with our first and just found that they were getting upset and kicking the blanket off in the night.

I initially blanket swaddled with a cellular blanket but you could use a muslin if it was warm, then because she was born 8"11 after about a week or two I moved to the zippy up swaddles, or velcro, tried various, but she only really liked the sleeping bags and didn't love being swaddled

Elphamouche · 31/03/2024 18:27

I have a 9 day old, she sleeps best being swaddled.

she sleeps in her moses during the day and her next to me at night, once she’s swaddled she’s out like a light!

Ivorymoon · 31/03/2024 20:48

We initially used the Love to Dream swaddle bags and then sleeping bags - you can get smaller ones for newborns. During the day baby sleeps under a cellular blanket mainly, which is fine as we are there too.

I think these type of pouch things are suitable from birth, we had one from boots. https://www.ergopouch.co.uk/cocoon-swaddle-bag-1-0-tog-daisies
But to be honest we went for a warm top layer, such as a cardigan or thin fleece suit, and then a cellular blanket, which are perfectly safe because theyres not great expanse of fabric to go over babies face.

Edited

We use the ergopouch cocoon swaddles and they’ve been great for us. I like that they’re tog rated and there’s a clear size guide so you know you’re swaddling safely. I just follow their recommendations and check baby’s chest, and it’s been a pretty stress-free experience.
