Pregnancy

Ate some veggie pate

I am so upset with myself, I am staying at a hotel in Sweden and two days ago I had a little bit (like maybe a teaspoon worth) of vegan pate from mushrooms. I literally did not think about it at all but I've just read you should avoid all pates. It was one you keep in the fridge so that's the risky one. I'm 20 weeks and so worried nowSad

Veggie pate isn’t pate. It’s meat ones you need to avoid.

The nhs advice is to avoid all pates even veggie ones

A teaspoon of vegetables/vegan (pate) is not going to be harmful OP.
First pregnancy?

Thank you @ZekeZeke yes it's my first pregnancy. I think it's because listeria is such a big worry and especially when you then make a mistake and kick yourself for it!

When I was pregnant, I read all the advice and realised much of it was absolute overkill. I dont eat meat or fish but I ate veggie pate, soft cheese (on one occasion unpasteurised cheese), peanut butter, and had a wine spritzer.
Everything was fine.

I'm guessing this may be your first pregnancy, or that you're anxious about health, OP?

Veg pate won't harm you or the baby.

@orzo15 It's really not an issue, the NHS. advice is far too broad to allow for people without a brain cell (like they'd it well past its use by and having been out of the fridge for days)

you ate it days ago and you're not unwell, so what do you think the risk is??

I didn’t stop eating anything when I was pregnant. It’s fine.

I'm vegan and have many experiences of NHS just not understanding what it means. To be on the safe side they'll say "not even vegan pate" but honestly don't worry, it's like saying "don't have milk" and including coconut milk in that.

You will be absolutely fine

Thank you all. The worry is because of listeria and the incubation period is a couple of weeks so that's why I feel worried. And because even vegan pate is not pasteurised there is a risk of listeria

I can get worried about health things and especially this pregnancy after having a loss at 13 weeks last year, just needed some reassurance from others who may have done the same or eaten something they shouldn't have during pregnancy

I made mushroom pate once and it was mushroom fried off and whizzed up with some cream cheese and seasoning then refrigerated. Whatever the NHS website says, there’s no logical reason why you wouldn’t be able to eat that when pregnant. And if it is bad then how is cheesecake ok? Or a mushroom pasta dish?

More importantly though it was 2 days ago. If you feel fine, you are fine.

OP I understand your worries (My firstborn was stillborn)
I am vegan but honestly, you are over thinking.

I practically lived on soft serve ice cream when pregnant with DD.

Oh I'm so sorry @ZekeZeke

I know I am probably overthinking, I just went straight into a panic when I read online avoid all pates even vegetable ones because it may contain listeria. That word in pregnancy is panic fuel!

It’s normal to worry especially after a previous loss but if it’s something like shop bought vegan cream cheese and mushrooms, which along with some garlic and a few herbs would be the typical ingredients for a vegan mushroom pate, you don’t have to worry about pasteurisation or listeria any more than you would if you ate the cream cheese spread on a bagel.

Don’t google. Think about it - have you ever met anyone who has had listeria?

I had a liver pate starter at a work event when I was about 14 weeks pregnant didn't even think about it until after had a small panic but chances of listeria are very very low. I've also had a couple of medium rare steaks and a rarer than it should have been burger. 28 weeks now with what appears to be a healthy active baby. Tried for 12 years and lots of IVF so it's a very precious pregnancy but if you actually look in to it properly the risks are miniscule!

How many times have you had listeria or known someone who has?

Report
OopsieeDaisy · 28/03/2024 23:48

I think I read that the risk with veggie pate is if they’re made with raw egg, so there’s a good chance that it wasn’t anyway!
