I thought morning sickness was hereditary?

My mum and sister have never felt, or been sick, in any of their pregnancies. Resulting in two girls and one boy.

I am 6+2 and for the past few days have felt so queasy and the food aversions are extremely strong. It’s worse in the morning and late at night. I have just dry heaved in the bathroom, so wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not full blown vomiting in a week or so!

(I am really not complaining, so happy to be pregnant after loss as unpleasant as this symptom is - I know it’s common!)

Everything I’ve read says morning sickness runs in families, if your mum and sister were you’re more likely to be and if they weren’t then you’re probably like them. I wonder why I’m different so far!

Mine varied between my own pregnancies.

I've never heard of it being hereditary. I was sick all the way through my first pregnancy with my dd and I'm currently 28 weeks with another girl and haven't had any at all. My sister was sick with all 3 and she had 2 boys and a girl

DustyLee123 · 28/03/2024 08:43

I was a midwife and it’s not something ive ever heard.

HumphreyCobblers · 28/03/2024 08:46

I had massively varying degrees of sickness in my pregnancies but my sister and mother didn't suffer at all.

MississippiAF · 28/03/2024 08:47

I have never heard of if being hereditary. It’s not even the same for individuals between different pregnancies

cosylife · 28/03/2024 08:50

The only woman in my family to have had morning sickness was my Nan, in one of her 6 pregnancies. Never heard it was hereditary! I’ve had awful sickness in both my pregnancies and no one apart from my Nan had it!

My mum sailed through pregnancy with me eating greasy sausage rolls. I felt constantly sick for months with additional random retching and vomiting with both kids. I had way more dry heaving than actual vomiting but it was a bit of a lottery which made work "interesting". Still haven't lived down being sick on a policeman and a plate of biscuits (at the same time)

Mil wasn't sick with any of hers. Sil 1 wasn't either. Sil 2 was.

Interestingly both me and sil 2 suffered from appalling travel sickness as kids.

Never heard of it being hereditary. My mum and sister both fine and I had HG.

Octavia64 · 28/03/2024 08:53

I've never heard that,

I had horrendous hyperemesis and no one in my family has had it before or since.

I did have twins.

Sara1988 · 28/03/2024 08:59

Recent research suggests it's more to do with the father than the mother. My mum was fine with me and horrendously sick with brother who had different dad.

SnookyPook · 28/03/2024 09:05

I'd heard you were more likely to have a pregnancy like your MiL but again, no idea if that's true! In any case, my poor Mum had HG twice... I had nausea but no vomiting with my first, and nothing with my second. My Sis had some sickness but nothing too bad.

peonyjam · 28/03/2024 09:30

My mum and maternal grandmother did not particularly suffer with morning sickness but I had severe sickness/HG with my son. I had also heard it was hereditary so I really didn't expect to be so unwell.

Firsttimebabymama · 28/03/2024 14:12

My mum never had a days sickness with either of her 3 pregnancies. I'm on week 35 and still sick almost daily- which is a lot better than the first 20 weeks or so when I lost weight and needed to be on a drip. My Grandmother however had terrible morning sickness.

PickledScrump · 28/03/2024 22:01

Definitely not hereditary. It can even vary between pregnancies. I had one with sickness, one with nausea and one absolutely fine, all three are girls.

This is only anecdotal but I had very bad sickness in all my pregnancies with both my dh and exh. DH's exw had 2 children with him and she didn't have sickness in either.

My mum didn't have any sickness in any of her pregnancies.

I do get really bad car sickness and random bouts of nausea/vomiting when I'm not pregnant, so I think I'm just more prone to feeling sick in general and the pregnancy hormones make it worse.

SarahB88 · 28/03/2024 23:32

Never heard of it being hereditary. No one in my family has had any pregnancy sickness issues then I ended up with HG. My partners mum sailed through her pregnancy with him too so don’t think it’s anything to do with the fathers mum either. My midwife said she’d keep an eye on my iron because my mum was severely anaemic with me but I’ve been controlled with iron tablets so far and I’m nearly 33 weeks.
