Transverse position at 34 weeks

My baby has been in a transverse position for the last few weeks and hasn’t moved since. I’m. 34 weeks pregnant and getting worried that the baby is stuck in this position now. Has anyone here any experience from a transverse position ? Did you opt for a ECV or not ? What were the outcomes? I’m worried about an ECV as it comes with risks but also worrying about not doing as that also means risks.. not sure what the best thing to do is.. any advice is welcome :)

Have a look at spinning babies website. My last baby was breech at 38 weeks but turned herself.

I had a transverse, went for a scan at 36 weeks got admitted into hospital until the birth.
they asked if I wanted them to try move him but I just opted for a c section.

Mary9104 · 22/03/2024 18:21

@Kathryn91 thanks! How come you were admitted? At what week was your c section performed?

My baby was transverse for pretty much my whole pregnancy! I had an elective at 37 weeks but that was due to placenta previa.

Recovery was fine, and 10 weeks later back to normal ( apart from 2 stone heavier pre pregnancy 😂)

@Mary9104 They admitted me as it was my second pregnancy and they were worried about going into natural labour. As the breaking of the waters could affect the cord. I lived half an hour away from the hosptial which they said was to far.
I had one booked anyway for 38 weeks but I managed to let me go have him at 37 weeks as I couldn’t stay away from my toddler for 2 weeks.
I went home 24hours later,

Did they say anything about if baby doesn’t move? Have you another scan booked?

Mary9104 · 22/03/2024 18:40

@Kathryn91 thanks for the explanation. I’m glad to hear that everything went alright in the end.

They won’t do another check until 36 weeks as they have said that the baby still has time to move until then but I’m a bit sceptical as the baby has been stuck transverse now for several weeks..

My two were transverse from 31 weeks. Dd1 went head down at 37 weeks. Dd2 went head down at 39.5 and I went into labour the next day

Kathryn91 · 22/03/2024 18:44

@Mary9104
Yep! Exactly what happened to me, they didn’t even mention it being a ‘problem’ until I went for my 36 week scan. And that was only meant to be a growth scan so I wasn’t prepared. They did keep saying baby can move at any point.
But the lady who did my 36week scan was a little worried and he hadn’t moved in weeks. Sent me to day Asssment and I never left 😂
Well I did just 10 days later ot whatever it was - and with a baby!

I was booked for a home delivery with my second and she was transverse at my 34 week check! I spent a lot of time over the coming weeks lying on the floor with my legs up on the settee. She eventually turned at about 37 weeks - it was the weirdest sensation ......
I went on to have a very straightforward home delivery 🙂

pambeesleyhalpert · 22/03/2024 18:54

Mine was transverse at 34 but had moved by 37

Another vote for spinning babies.

Mine was all over the place. I ended up having a planned c section as a result (ironically he was head down by the day of the section). The obstetrician requested the op to be scheduled for 38w, it happened a couple of days after that

CloseTheCurtainsPlease · 22/03/2024 19:03

My baby was transverse around 34 weeks. He did eventually move back to head down just before the 36 week scan and he stayed head down after that until he was born at 41+5.

ithinkitsdone · 22/03/2024 19:17

My youngest was transverse. At 34 weeks they said I had 3 weeks to turn her or I was being admitted until birth. I had a home birth planned so I spent hours hanging upside down, went for massages, moxi combustion etc.
At 37 weeks they thought she had moved back to back.
Attempted home birth at 41.5 weeks but she was in a poor position coming out nose first. I had an emergency section in the end.

ColleenDonaghy · 22/03/2024 19:43

My second was transverse all along but I was planning on an ELCS anyway after an EMCS first time round so it wasn't a big deal. I wasn't admitted but I don't know why, not sure if it was a covid thing, or the fact that I never got past 2cm first time round or the fact that she was back down. Not sure.

AmaryllisChorus · 22/03/2024 19:57

DS1 was transverse. I could feel his head poking out one side of my stomach so I spent an entire night stroking and massaging him down. Turned out it wasn't his head but his bum and I'd massaged him into breech. Had a Caesarian anyway!
A planned C-section can be a lovely way to give birth if the baby is in any way not in optimal position. No tearing, no stress to the baby, no danger of tangled cord, no exhaustion from hours of labour. I would have preferred an easy natural birth over a C-section but was very grateful for DS's sake and I had no pain at all. A friend who gave birth the same week as me was in agony from infected stitches post natural birth.

Hotgirlwinter · 22/03/2024 20:00

My first was transverse on and off through last trimester, didn’t move fully until 36/37 weeks. He kept flipping back. I wouldn’t have gone for ECV if he hadn’t have moved.

Have you got a big yoga ball? Get bouncing and like PP said, there’s lots of good advice online about positions that help move baby.

You’ve still got plenty of time so I wouldn’t overthink it too much but won’t hurt to get some movement going to encourage them to turn

sarahc336 · 22/03/2024 20:09

Dd2 was transverse/unstable as she would often go head down but then kinda pop back out again, she turned herself at 37 weeks but the remained back to back 🙄. I was advised to sit on my ball as much with an open pelvis to give her room to drop head down. I was also told to not to slouch backwards, so prop yourself up when sat on the sofa/driving etc as slouching backwards gives them too much space to remain transverse.

TodayForTomorrow · 22/03/2024 20:22

I was told repeatedly at midwife check ups that my second was breech. I was told that if she turned, I would know about it.

Went into labour terrified as hadn't had the fabled 'tsunami in the tummy' and asked them to check her position. Turns out she was head down but facing sideways, so not sure if this had confused the midwives.

I delivered VBAC but it was a slow, painful labour because her position meant the crown of her head wasn't pushing hard enough on the cervix to cause dilation. In the end, I was given lovely pethidine and tucked up in bed on my side and my daughter decided to shuffle herself over.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/03/2024 20:23

I had a transverse baby but also placenta previa so had a c section

Huriya · 23/03/2024 04:00

Im currently 34w+3days and my baby is breech. Midwife has adviced it would need to be a csection if baby doesnt turn. Have a growth scan and consultant appointment booked on 3rd April when il be exactly 36w, if baby hasnt turned a Csection will be booked for when im 39w. My baby has been breech since the start of third trimester and I honestly dont anticipate him moving to headdown position. Its like he enjoys being transverse or breech 😫

IssyFleur · 23/03/2024 04:59

My baby went from breech to transverse and turned head down at 39 weeks on the day of my planned c-section or thereabouts! I didn't actually feel her move, very strange. I did a ton of bouncing on my ball, figure of eights, walking, yoga and sitting forward on the sofa when resting, although it could have just been coincidental. I still ended up having a c-section a day later but that's another story! However, I found the recovery fairly straightforward and the pain manageable. I was offered an ECV but didn't go for it due to the risks highlighted to us. I felt that starting interventions was more likely to lead to a c-section anyway so preferred the idea of a planned one that didn't disrupt baby (although clearly my baby had other ideas).

Ismo456 · 23/03/2024 14:02

My eldest was transverse until quite late.

I remember lots of bouncing on the yoga ball and I think sitting on it and doing figure of 8 hip movements.

whatever it was did the trick and she turned and got herself super engaged from then x
