Is it unwise to book a holiday before anomaly scan?

Hi all,

I’m 16 weeks pregnant, i went for a private gender scan yesterday and the sonographer also checked on the baby and everything looked normal. I want to book a holiday to Seychelles, going when I'm 24 weeks but the hotel wants full payment soon which is before my 20 week anomaly scan. It's also non refundable. Is it wise to book a holiday before receiving 100% confirmation that everything is okay? All the scans I've had so far (2 private scans and an NHS scan) has confirmed that everything looks normal and fine.

i was planning on doing a private anomaly scan at 18 weeks but unfortunately the hotel wants payment within the next 3 days. Do you think it would be fine to go ahead?

Nobody can tell you this. That is what the scan is for. Nobody can tell you for sure that all will be well.

Everything looks normal and fine because they aren't looking for the same things as on the anomaly scan. Nobody but the sonographer on the day can tell you if things are looking good so far.

I know that something can happen whatever your age, but I’d take into consideration your age and family history and then I’d book if it seems likely all will be okay. If, for example, you’re older and there’s more of a chance of something being wrong, I might be more hesitant, otherwise I’d just go for it. Enjoy yourself!

Would insurance not cover this?

Hi OP, to be honest I think this is one of those situations where you have to decide what you’re comfortable with.

The thing is even after you’ve had your anomaly scan nobody can give you 100% confirmation that everything is okay. I have one friend who had no concerns found at anomaly scan and instead they were found randomly at 30 weeks, I also have a friend who got the all clear at the anomaly scan and at a 34 week growth scan concerns were found. Essentially nobody at any point during pregnancy can ever say to you 100% that everything is perfect, you have to just decide whether you want to put your life on hold until your baby is born or whether you want to keep living in the meantime- obviously just being safe for baby still.

I’m due in a few weeks now and we’ve had multiple holidays throughout my pregnancy, including some before the anomaly scan. We just made sure we had travel insurance, chose destinations where if needed we could access a good hospital and were sensible. Only you can decide what you are comfortable with x

im 12 weeks and we’ve booked to go on hols when I’ll be 21/22 weeks. Our travel insurance covers the trip if I can’t travel on medial advice. You can’t live assuming the worst!
