changing table - yay or nay?

20 weeks with first baby and starting to think about sorting the babies room! the room is small so its looking likely we will get a tall boy set of drawers which are usually about 120cm high, expect these will be too high to change the baby on but storage is an issue so no other choice!
question is - do I need a changing table? I have also seen changing boards that fit on top of the cot that i'm thinking could be good? any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

we had one for our boys in their tiny nursery, it was essential tbh

PixieTrance89 · 20/03/2024 22:10

I haven't ever had a changing table for any of mine, usually changed them on the sofa or bed

Mummapenguin20 · 20/03/2024 22:12

I have a fold away one wouldn’t be without it. Wish I’d got one with the first 3

RosesAndHellebores · 20/03/2024 22:13

We had one and they couldn't roll off because there was a safety guard/rail, not that I'd have turned my back. Loved it. The shelves underneath stored nappies, baby paraphernalia, muslins, etc.

Downstairs, when they were tiny, I used a changing mat on the counter in the utility room.

The DC are grown up now. The changing table is still in use in the shed. It is used to store seed trays, flower pots, plant food, etc.

I loved ours - had a c section so couldn't do floor at first, and I wouldn't fancy having wee and poo all over our bed. (And yes, sometimes it does get everywhere.)

It was also very useful for a toddler that tried to escape every nappy change.

Catowl · 20/03/2024 22:16

Total waist of money.
Changing mat on floor, bed, kitchen table all worked perfectly fine.
Oh and yes I had C-sections and was perfectly fine sitting on the floor.
Baby can't roll and fall when already on the floor and this really is a very common problem with babies. It happens all the time! ( yes I do know that to be true as I work in safeguarding).
Save your money and just buy a changing mat.

FloofCloud · 20/03/2024 22:18

I got one with shelves, used the shelves but rarely the changing part as both my kids were active and dangerous on them lol 😂

Nitwittishy · 20/03/2024 22:19

Have always just changed on the floor (not risking any rolling off). It was useful in the early stages to have multiple changing stations (mat, nappies and wipes etc to hand) around the house. More than one mat has also been useful for, erm, more messy times 🙄

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/03/2024 22:21

I've never seen the point of a changing table. We used a normal chest of drawers and put the change mat on top. Obviously we never left the dc unattended.

OolongTeaDrinker · 20/03/2024 22:22

If you have a c-section you'll be glad you have one. I wouldn't have managed without one for the first few weeks. They are bulky though. A friend of mine has a fold up one like this one which seems like a good compromise.

anyolddinosaur · 20/03/2024 22:23

Used the floor. If I'd had a C-section I've have used the table, just put a plastic tablecloth on it. Buy a plastic tablecloth anyway, put it under their high chair when they start to feed themself.

Mumof1andacat · 20/03/2024 22:26

Ours was made to be on top of the chest of drawers. Drawers are still in use today. DS is 11! We loved our. Saved my back and knees. My DH is tall with a few back problems so it helped to have a changing top/table.

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/03/2024 22:27

Mine was an absolute necessity after having c sections.

And it had great storage too.

charliefair · 20/03/2024 22:29

I changed all my babies on my knee, I also never changed them in their room until they were well over 12 months and that would only be very occasionally. In the early days we would have been in the living room or my bedroom so I wouldn't actively go to another room to change a nappy.

Doubtisthemaster · 20/03/2024 22:34

Didn't cross my mind to get a changing table for any of my dc, used one of the padded, plastic changing mats either on the floor/bed/sofa, wherever really. They start to turn over pretty early so can't see the point to them myself when other surfaces that are always there do the job just as well and are lower/safer.

Doubtisthemaster · 20/03/2024 22:36

Oh and I had a C section with dc 3, managed just fine without one still.

That’s impressive, it took me a couple of weeks to be able to even get up from sitting on the floor without grabbing onto something to pull me up, let alone while wrangling a baby! :)

Marzipan23 · 21/03/2024 07:17

wow thanks everyone! we cant get different drawers because we will need the storage and I dont fancy trying to change the baby so high up, I think table on top of the cot sounds good! understand I wont use it all the time as they will be in with us on a night for a while but even if it saves my back a couple of times a day I think i'll be grateful!
I didnt know you could get fold down ones, thanks to the lady who posted that! has anyone else used them?

I loved my changing table but we had plenty of room,it’s not an essential in my opinion

BananaHammock23 · 21/03/2024 07:36

We might be the only people who still use our changing table 2.5 years later! He's been on it for every change and now we use it to get him dressed. From the minute he started walking he'd never go on the floor to be changed, he'd be up running around. Table helps us contain him! Never left unattended obviously.

jannier · 21/03/2024 08:21

You don't need one in reality once you get going changes will be done anywhere and everywhere....car boots, on your lap etc don't waste your money

How on earth do you dress a toddler on a changing table? I would be stretching to reach mine when they were standing on a table!!

How splendid of you.

CurlewKate · 21/03/2024 09:24

I wouldn't bother. I had changing mats in every room and just used the floor. You don't have to worry about them falling off!
