Help!! I’ve eaten raw chicken and am terrified it will harm my pregnancy!

Hi all,
I’m new here and very new to all of this but I am 6 weeks into my first pregnancy and today at lunch I was eating in my office cafeteria and half way through the chicken leg I was eating I noticed red juice and undercooked meat. I am terrified. I have made myself sick (I know that’s really bad but I’m freaking out) but I don’t think much came up. Is there anything else I can do?!
Thanks xx

I think it will be ok as your placenta has not yet taken over, you're baby is taking from the yolk sac.

I should think it would just be you being poorly from eating raw chicken at the minute but if you are not yet with a midwife, ring your GP and double check just for a bit of advice.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 19/03/2024 13:48

That doesn't even look raw, it just looks like the darker meat near the bone. You will be fine.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 19/03/2024 13:49

That looks like the normal colour of cooked chicken near the bone. It's a darker colour, it's not raw.

MummyDummyNow · 19/03/2024 13:49

I had awful food poisoning when I was pregnant, and it didn't harm the baby at all. But as PP said, this chicken doesn't look raw. Plus you made yourself sick I'm sure you'll be fine OP. Try not to panic too much.

I ate some undercooked drumsticks while I was pregnant last summer and was absolutely fine, don’t worry. If you’re super concerned I’d just taken some activated charcoal.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2024 13:56

That doesnt actually look raw and if you feel queasy its because you are worried I imagine.
Drink a peppermint tea to settle your stomach and as long as you dont get food poisoning (if you get it you will REALLY know) theres nothing to worry about. In fact even if you are ill baby is likley to ge fine

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/03/2024 13:58

That looks fine tbh, just the darker leg meat. But if you do get food poisoning its very, very unlikely that it will harm your pregnancy

DappledThings · 19/03/2024 13:59

Agree with others, that's not undercooked, it's just darker meat. You're fine.

Cinai · 19/03/2024 14:02

That’s not undercooked, undercooked chicken is very light pink

IncorrectPasscode · 19/03/2024 14:02

Agreeing with pp's. I had some raw chicken (it was fully red) I didn't feel sick or anything after and baby was fine :)

WarshipRocinante · 19/03/2024 14:04

That’s not raw, but even if it was, are you in the UK? Because you’ll be fine. There is always the chance you could get a jippy tummy but you’ll mostly me totally fine with chicken here.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 19/03/2024 14:46

That looks like dark meat, not raw. And you cannot cause a miscarriage with food poisoning. It's unhelpful to suggest that.

DirtyDensDog · 19/03/2024 14:49

Try not to worry, I agree with the other posters that the chicken looks cooked, it's just the dark meat.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

She hasn't mentioned miscarriage though.

She said she’s terrified it’ll harm her pregnancy so I don’t think it’s wrong they assumed she’s worried about a miscarriage

I live on a farm and so have a sharp awareness of the dangers of toxoplasmosis - sadly this can be harmful to the pregnancy and to the baby once born. Food poisoning would be horrid too but I know this is far less dangerous for the baby and I’m not worried about myself.
I am not trying to be unhelpful just a scared first time mum looking for advice. Thank you to everyone who has put kind and helpful messages x

The best advice would be to call your midwife if you’re worried. Even if the meat is absolutely fine it might put your mind at rest to speak with them

Thank you, I don’t have a midwife allocated yet but I am waiting for a a call back from my GP so hopefully that will give a bit of peace of mind x
