Fainting in pregnancy

Hi
Wondering if anyone knows whether passing out is a cause for concern? Passed out at work while standing up (had been walking around for 3-5 mins feeling fine). Landed on my side.
Everything I can see online suggests it's fine, but idk whether I should call GP/ midwife to get checked?
Thanks xx

I just checked with my midwife when I had a few fainting episodes a few weeks ago. She said it was fine on occasion but to report it again if it kept happening.

If there wasnt a good reason (hot, hadnt eaten in a while, dehydrated). I would go and get checked out. Fainting while pregnant is not great as you might hurt the bump. How far along are you?

Thanks- I think I might have been a little dehydrated but I'm unsure. Defo out of ordinary for me. I'm 12+4 weeks.
I did the NHS 111 online to see & it said to call GP today, so I think I'll give it a go. They'll probably tell me nothing to worry about but rather put my mind at rest, I think.

Oh, poor you!

I’m sure it’s a one off but I have been fainting all my life due to a phobia and now I can recognise when it’s about to happen so i immediately try to sit down or just lower myself so that the fall is not bad.

I had this a couple of times when my blood sugar went too low. Eat little and often and massively up your water intake.

Tumbler2121 · 18/03/2024 11:19

Think it's just one of those things ... I fainted when expecting DD, think it was a perfume nearby. Thought it was a pregnancy indicator, like throwing up!

anonhop · 18/03/2024 11:32

Thank you all. Been on hold to GP for 30 mins so far & thinking i might give up and call it a day! Feeling still quite woozy so if that doesn't improve, I will call again later.
Feeling v reassured, thank you! I'd eaten plenty, I hadn't just stood up, wasn't too hot etc, so I think it must be dehydration.

Annoying as I was in the kitchen making a drink when it happened, haha!

I fainted quite a few times during my pregnancy. The first time I was taken to a&e as it happened in work. A&e were very happy I came in and could document it in my records. I then fainted a few more times which meant I needed to go for further tests and checks.
My midwife said that although fainting is common in pregnancy, I needed to report it to gp and Midwife and get checked just to rule things out.

Thank you for this- that's rly good to know. Was everything ok in the end?

Ideally I would like to report it just so it's in my notes etc. I'm at 45 mins on hold to GP so will give up after an hour & try midwifery team...

Yeah now have a healthy newborn. There was no reason for the fainting but I went through lots of heart checks, scans and x rays to make sure myself and my baby were okay.
The consultants said the odd fainting is fine, just to make sure you keep hydrated and don’t push yourself but since it kept happening and would happen when I was relaxed then they had to check it. Everytime I fainted I had to check in with my midwife.

@Hiddenvoice

Thank you, that's so reassuring. GP advised me to ring NHS 111, who have told me to go to urgent care. Not what I want as I'm sure I'm fine & as with you, just a one off, but ofc want to make sure baby is ok!

I was fine until 23 weeks then suddenly fainted and bashed my head off the floor. I have had 3 incidences since where I've had to lie on the floor to prevent myself going again. I am 26 weeks now so approx once per week.
I went to the doctor and had heart tracing, Blood tests and BP tested but all was normal..BP is lower side of normal but always has been.
GP and midwife have both said definitely the right thing to get checked out incase there's something going on they need to know about but if all tests ok then it's unfortunately something that you just have to cope with. That's what I was told anyway!

@anonhop probably for the best to just get checked over and make sure it’s just a random spell of fainting.
Like a pp, I fainted quite a few times and once they realised I was all okay then it just became something I had to deal with.

Hopefully this is just a one off for you!

Wow, must be scary esp that far along. Thank you. Urgent care immediately sent me to A&E for ECG etc, so I'm in A&E facing an 8.5h wait! I do feel guilty as a lot of sick people here, but you're right, I'll feel better to know all is ok & just a random spell x

I had dizziness and the odd time when I nearly passed out (but did get onto the floor quickly!). In my case it was low blood sugar - I wasn't eating as often or as much as my child demanded. Even at nearly 3 he still has an enormous appetite 😅

Get checked out just in case, but it doesn't necessarily mean something's wrong.

JRTfan · 18/03/2024 16:52

@anonhop I have low blood pressure and have fainted before when I'm in extreme pain so half expected an issue in pregnancy but it reared it's head later than I thought it would!
Hopefully your tests will be fine. I just try and eat regularly, drink loads and have something sugary to hand in case you do have a funny moment..I have lucozade in my desk drawer at work. It's not ideal but now I know the signs (feeling hot and sick) I can get myself on the floor and prevent a full faint.

anonhop · 18/03/2024 17:38

Thanks everyone! I'm getting checked over now. I don't think it was low sugar, but I'm snacking on chocolates, you know, just in case!!!
