The dreading hemorrhoids

Sorry if this is TMI but just looking for advice/opinions. I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant and about a week about I develop a particularly large thrombosed Hemorrhoid which a nurse practitioner confirmed. She prescribed me Scheriproct ointment to be applied twice a day but has told me not to use it for longer than 2 weeks as it is steroid cream. So far I’m not seeing any difference I think the blood clot might be slowly disbursing but it’s still very large I’d say the size of 1 or 2 large grapes. It is very uncomfortable 😩

just wondering as anyone experienced this and managed to reduce the size before labour or if it likely to stay this big till I’ve given birth?? Feeling extremely anxious about giving birth with bad hemorrhoids already never mind after pushing.

Hello OP, I developed one at about 38 weeks and no amount of cream has helped. My DS is 6 now and I still have the bastard thing, it itches and bleeds and is just so annoying. I’m currently pregnant again now, however once I’ve had the baby and recovered, I’ll be looking at having it taken off privately because I simply cannot live with it any more. You have my sympathy because they are damn uncomfortable.

Sadly the NHS don’t remove them anymore so it’s just private if you want it doing.

Sorry it’s not more positive news, just make peace with it for now and address it post birth.

Hje2024 · 17/03/2024 17:02

In the past 6 years has yours come and gone or just permanently been there?

yeah I spoke to the nurse last week who said it would have to be private but did say don’t do it before your finished having children as it will be a waste of money.

when you gave birth was yours large? Mine is large and external. So embarrassed about giving birth with it but also making it 100x worse!

thank you for the reply.

I somehow developed one AFTER I had my son. I’d had a c section and had to have a catheter in for 24 hours and I really suspect it was maybe there but small and then sitting on it non stop for 24 hours made it 100x worse. It was complete agony, I now know what women mean when they say they’re more painful than childbirth. I actually was in tears with it for a good 3/4 days.

I used the germoloid cream I think it’s called and I’m not entirely sure if it really helped but I only suffered badly with it for maybe 4 days maximum and then it shrunk down in size again, honestly it was the size of about 2 grapes too, so painful. I hope it gets better for you soon!

Hje2024 · 17/03/2024 17:37

Thank you for the reply!

Im prepared for it to be horrendous post birth but I want to shrink it as much as possible beforehand. Honestly so uncomfortable!

oh god and there was me thinking a C-section would help the situation!

I had horrendous haemorrhoids with all three pregnancies. During my second labour my midwife was literally pushing them back in as I pushed my son out. They’ve been problematic ever since but I think they’re less sensitive now because they’ve been in and out so many times! 😅 sorry if that’s tmi!

have you tried gently pushing them back up with a finger of sudocrem?

Jellybelly888 · 17/03/2024 18:28

@Hje2024 yes sorry to say it’s been here the whole 6 years. I would have had it removed but always knew I wanted more children so I’ll hold off. For me, the cream just thins it out and it bleeds more? Not sure if it actually helps.

Don’t be worried about labour, the midwives see far worse!

RJ2023 · 17/03/2024 18:51

I have a huge amount of sympathy for you!

I had one of these evil things after suffering severe constipation on holiday a few years ago (sorry for tmi) - when I got back to the UK the creams eventually worked but going to the toilet was so painful for weeks...

Wishing you all the best :)

Hje2024 · 19/03/2024 08:11

Thank you everyone for the messages! I have attempted to push it back in but with it being external and large it isn’t going anywhere 😩 nothing is shrinking it either so looks like it’s here for long run!!

Hi Hje2024.
I literally feel your pain.
Mine just appeared suddenly on Friday.
I was at work and suddenly felt a bad pain in my bum and the sensation of something slithering out.
Oh it's massive like a small plum and so unconfortable.
I rang the doctor immediately and had a prescription sent to our late night Pharmacy.
So far no change.Just hoping it does soon shrink.
Sorry TMI, but i've had to use loads of pads knickers and 3 pairs of trousers since yesterday. It's sort of a blood stained discharge.

Oops sorry i should have said i'm not pregnant.

Ems1992 · 22/04/2024 18:07

Hi!
i had terrible haemorrhoids with my first, had a third degree tear, was stitched up and it’s never been the same since (my daughter is 6). Like PP’s it has remained since then, I even had a procedure to “sew” my bum back up inside and that didn’t work either. It’s always there but flares up and hurts maybe 4 times a year. I usually wrap an ice pack in a tea towel and ice it…
I am now pregnant with my second and dreading the same thing again, but I’ve elected for a section because it was just such a mess down there I don’t think it would withstand pushing!

BurbageBrook · 22/04/2024 18:19

I had one when pregnant OP but it disappeared immediately after birth. Don't lose hope yet!

Hi, hope all is well now and settled and your little one is safely here. Just wondering how it panned out for you? I’m 33 weeks pregnant and also have an excruciating thrombosed external Hemorrhoid that’s 3cm long. Gp also prescribed scheriproct but I guess I just can’t see it getting smaller as it’s so huge at the moment! Did yours go down eventually? Felt like crying all day as so painful 😭

Hje2024 · 11/01/2025 09:27

@Sabamum my little one will be 9 months next week. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Mine didn’t shrink at all for the rest of my pregnancy but they did stop hurting as much. Since having my baby they’ve shrunk but are still there but don’t bother me now and very rarely cause me any pain. I was told by a nurse if I plan to have more children then don’t get them removed because they will only come back 😩

Sabamum · 12/01/2025 09:53

Thank you for getting back to me and bug congrats on your little one. That’s good to hear that yours got less painful. This is my second and I’m 41 now so will likely be my last so will look at getting treated if it doesn’t go away on its own. The pain is a little more bearable today.

CherryRipe1 · 12/01/2025 10:35

Yes, been a martyr to farmer Giles for years particularly during and after pregnancies & just cannot risk constipation. I had a very bad flare recently after a stomach bug & GP said I have 2 internal and external but weirdly no bleeding. I've got a colorectal appointment next week. GP said NHS does do surgery on them and I believe there are two procedures but they are very painful apparently,😕. They've shrunk down now (typical) after a course of steroids cream & a high fibre diet, lots of figs, prunes and copious water. I'll try to remember the name of the cream but don't think it was scheriproct & it was brilliant (might have had prednisolone in it?). The pharmacist told me it's ok to repeat the cream as long as a break is taken in between courses.

CherryRipe1 · 12/01/2025 10:37

Also sitz baths were a godsend, got mine off the well known big online retailer.

Hi, I’m in the same position, was the C-section better?

Yes! 1000x
I still have the odd flare up (baby is 8 months old now) but it’s no where near as bad as postpartum with my daughter. Do not regret my decision!

Oh my goodness me too!! Way more painful than the other stuff! The day after I gave birth I sat crying in pain as they were so bad…. No one tell your this might happen! OP I suggest you take your own pain relief to hospital for after the birth, I could even get paracetamol until the dr came round - in agony for hours!

Mischance · 08/06/2025 13:18

Thrombosed piles and I are old friends!

On two occasions the only solution was a medic incising it and squeezing out the clot - anyone in the middle of Sunday lunch!? 😁It brings immediate and blissful relief - and one doc said he loved doing it because the patient walks out with a smile on their face. I honestly found no other treatment that actually got rid of the darned thing! Most treatments just aim for pain relief - something that is hard to achieve, so you have all my sympathy.

I was always puzzled as to how this healed so well given the germ soup that runs by the small wound each day, as under normal circumstances rubbing crap in a wound would be a Bad Idea. But on both occasions things settled quickly.

Once this one is gone (and it will eventually) you need to institute a regime to keep the traffic friendly! I take laxido every day - check with your doc if they feel this is OK in pregnancy - with lactulose top-up as needed. If you find yourself saddled with the rock of Gibralter, do not strain to shift it not even the tiniest bit - as soon as you realise that you cannot get it out with normal manoeuvres bung up a glycerine suppository. The best are branded as Fleet - I get mine online as they mostly come from America. The difference between these and the ordinary glycerine suppositories is that they are more solid and so easier to insert. They are a small solid cone rather than a flippy floppy item which you have to somehow persuade to negotiate the slalom run of piles before achieving your goal! A bit of KY helps too.

Once this one goes, diligent prevention is your friend.

Piles of good luck with this!

Mischance · 08/06/2025 13:19

For pain relief I would stand in the shower and direct the spray to the relevant region - oh joy!

CherryRipe1 · 09/06/2025 09:58

@Mischance My locy pharmacist gave me a tip to put suppositories in the freezer- top tip!
