Any other older mums pregnant?

Hi all,

I'm 42 years olds, today I found out I'm 8+2 with my first.

Any other older women out there currently pregnant or have positive stories to tell?

Being older I'm obviously very worried about genetic illness.

Congratulations! I had DS when I was 39. Pregnancy was low risk and straightforward. I had a c section and didn't bounce back like you hear that some did, but I recovered fine, gradually and took it slow. Now 20 months on I'm fitter than I was pre pregnancy.

tillytoodles1 · 16/03/2024 20:15

My mum had my sister when she was 41, no problems, just a huge age gap. My brother was 18 and I was 15.
Her mum had her at 49, but she was her 10th child.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 16/03/2024 20:21

I had my second at 42 by c-section after an emergency section at 39 with my first.I had an amnio for both pregnancies as my husband’s sister has severe learning difficulties and we just wanted to be as prepared as possible, but everything was fine.
It was a wonderful experience.
Congratulations!

tink3rb3ll · 16/03/2024 20:27

@tillytoodles1 @ringmybe11 both positive stories, thank you.

So far all good, only symptom I've currently got is extreme tiredness, which is hard when I haven't told anyone I'm pregnant yet.

@FormerlySpeckledyHen that's fantastic news, I just hear so many scare stories about being an older mum.

Hes perfect..unplanned but i honestly didnt know how much as a family we needed him.
Pregnancy & birth was text book 'normal'

Was pregnant with twins at 43.
Felt great all the way through- apart from bastarding heart burn later on 😩. Kept going to the gym for a while.
Kept working all the way to 37 weeks, travelling etc.
loved being pregnant soooo much.
And then we laughed like drains when we got them home- couldn't believe they let us take them home 🤣
Tired like any parent with twins. But I was pretty fit, don't know if that helped.
Relax, enjoy your pregnancy and your baby!
♥️

I fell pregnant at 44 after being married for 24 years and thinking I'd never have a baby.
Throughout the pregnancy I felt better than I'd felt in years - I was classed as high risk because of my age and weight (and an issue with my cervix which I discovered at 16 weeks). But I carried my little boy until 38+6 and was only induced because I developed pre-eclampsia. I ended up having a c-section which yes took it out of me as it's major surgery but I felt well enough to drive within 3 weeks of the birth.
I was also worried about genetic problems but after researching found that statistically my baby had the same chances of genetic issues as someone in their 30s.
My only bit of advice would be to take each day as it comes and try to stay happy and positive. Feel free to message me if you'd like to chat more and good luck with everything x

I had a very realistic dream last night that I was pregnant. I'm 51 but my periods are still v regular and I was late (in the dream) and too scared to test. All I could think was that my kids are nearly finishing school and I would be starting from scratch.

Anyway, it was a dream. So sorry, no help!

HotCrossBunnyInTheOven · 16/03/2024 20:49

Hi @tink3rb3ll

I am also 42 and I'm 7+2! It is quite scary isn't it but I've decided to stop googling and looking at other people's stories and just try and go with the flow. If any issues arise I will deal with them if and when it comes to it. I figure worrying isn't going to change anything.

I hope you have a wonderful and uneventful pregnancy 😊

Pip1402 · 16/03/2024 21:03

I recently had my first baby at 41. Everything went smoothly throughout and I'm also fitter now than I was before I had the baby. I paid privately for a NIPT test at around 10 weeks which gave some early reassurance. I was still nervous about potential issues but probably would have been no matter my age. Best of luck op and congratulations Smile

MudandMoet · 16/03/2024 21:10

Congratulations @tink3rb3ll and @HotCrossBunnyInTheOven

I'm 44 and currently 16+2 weeks. My NHS screening (12weeks) came back all low risk but I had a NIPT test at 14 weeks for extra reassurance and again all very low risk. I've had achey boobs/tender nipples from day one until last week and a touch of nausea on and off.

Found out from the NIPT we're having a girl 💕

I'd be lying if I didn't say some days the excitement outweighs the nerves and other days it's the opposite!

I know I'm not out of the woods yet at 16 weeks and I won't stop worrying until I have little baby in my arms but it's starting to feel so real all of a sudden.

Sheepsheeps · 17/03/2024 11:40

Hi! Congratulations btw 😊
I'm currently 18w with my 1st and I'm 43!
We haven't told anyone yet and are absolutely terrified of what people's opinions might be 🙈 I know it shouldn't matter but I'm sure we will get our fair few comments about being 'too old' etc
I'm just working on the premise that I feel fit and healthy and that's all the counts. There are far more unhealthy pregnant mums in their 20s

Cinai · 17/03/2024 11:46

I turn 41 next month and I’m 13 weeks pregnant with my first. I’m also stressed out because of everything we hear about high risk etc, but I’m happy to say that everything went really well so far. I don’t have many symptoms at all but baby was doing fine at the 12 weeks scan and tests came back as low risk. Wishing you all the best for the pregnancy!

bloodynewusernameagain · 17/03/2024 14:03

Also 41 next month 16 weeks preg with 2nd (first at 39). Both uncomplicated pregnancies (well this one so far!)

I paid for the super ridiculously extended nipt for max poss info. All straightforward (although through it I actually found out I have a recessive deafness genetic mutation! Most people have something, but in this instance my husband doesn't have it so no issues with offspring).

Feel totally knackered but then so do all the people 10 years younger than me that i know!

tink3rb3ll · 17/03/2024 18:52

Hi all, congratulations to all that are currently pregnant.

It's nice to hear all the positive stories, all of you feared because of the stigma of being older, me too but I think I'm gonna stop listening to all the horror stories of being older it's 2024, we live longer and healthier lives nowadays 💪🏽

I am 40 and 26 weeks pregnant (IVF we were trying for 12 years!) ..smooth sailing so far. Had no issues or symptoms at all until 20ish weeks when I had a couple of fainting episodes but that's apparently due to my very healthy low blood pressure!
I'm consultant led because of my age and it being IVF but the midwife and doctors have been happy at every appointment and although I was worried at first id get treated differently no one medical has been bothered at all.

LiIacMoon · 17/03/2024 20:55

I'm 38 expecting my first.
Everything looked perfect at 20 week scan.
I have since developed some serious complications with my health but nothing to do with age as discovered i have an underlying condition .
I know quite a few women all had babies late 30s/40s and babies are healthy

Can learning difficulties be detected with amino test or did you just need reassurance that everything would be ok?

Julianne65 · 04/09/2024 12:13

I'm 47 and pregnant. Was pregnant in my early 40s with twins but had a miscarriage. Haven't been trying and assumed I was going through menopause as my periods are all over the place. We're both still in shock! I'll be 48 when the baby is born.

Augustbaby27 · 10/01/2025 02:14

Hello, I’m 42 and currently 7w 3d… I had some light brown discharge for the last couple weeks with some red blood when I wiped 2 separate times about a week apart. My 1st and only other child is 21 years old. I’m super nervous something is going to happen. I keep feeling almost like a Twinge or a tickle sensation in my uterus and maybe even super light cramping…. I had ultrasound at 5w 4d and then again at 7w and saw feral heartbeat going strong, makes me feel much better. But I was put on rest for week until next US and notes on the test say “possible impending miscarriage”. My Doctor says I’m high ridge due to age and having diabetes. I feel pregnant especially in the morning, my breasts hurt, and oh I am having the craziest most vivid dreams every night. I’m just so scared to lose this little one. Anyone have any advice? Thank you for reading ❤️

MumChp · 10/01/2025 02:32

Contact your mideife/GP. I hope you will do fine.

Augustbaby27 · 10/01/2025 04:32

🙏 thank you this makes me smile for sure. Reading ”impending possible miscarriage “ is all I keep seeing. I have a repeat scan Tuesday so I’m hoping and praying I make it to it.
