If you had PPH in your first pregnancy, what did your consultant recommend to avoid/mitigate it second time around?

I had it in my first pregnancy and currently 18 weeks, I'm seeing the consultant in a couple of weeks but really worried about it happening again.

Gave birth during covid first time around and ended up with suspected sepsis and wasn't given antibiotics for days, which delayed blood transfusions.

Whilst I'm really happy to be pregnant again, but I'm terrified of giving birth again.

Just wanted to ask others experiences.

TIA

Hello, have had 2 babies with 2 PPHs. Now overdue with a 3rd… the plan for me as agreed with consultant is to go in and have a canula situated in my arm at the start of labour so they can give any drugs required to contract uterus v.quickly if needed. I’ll also be having the injection to deliver the placenta quickly.

They’ve also run my bloods an extra time to make sure I’m not anaemic this time as that can increase the risk of PPH.

There doesn’t seem to be much else, although I wasn’t allowed a homebirth or to give birth on the MLU this time and have to go to labour ward.

Consultant did say it can be random so there’s a good chance it won’t happen this time! (Which I’m hoping for!)

Weirdly, nothing at all. I had a PPH with DD1, and with DD2 I had a consultant appointment because I had a low weight pre-pregnancy, but that was fine and the consultant said that as long as my growth scan was fine she was happy for me to give birth wherever (labour ward, MLU, even at home). They didn't know what caused my PPH, possibly a combination of anaemia, and the placenta taking a long time to come. I'll be honest, neither the midwives nor the consultant seemed that bothered by it, which I found very surprising.

As it happened, with DD2 my waters broke at 34 weeks and I was induced at 37. No haemorrhage. Like you I was nervous of this, and after I gave birth and was waiting to be stitched I must have asked the midwife about 10 times to please check I wasn't bleeding too much. Obviously I could feel I was bleeding a bit, just while they got the local anaesthetic etc together to do the stitches, and I did get a bit panicky about it. But it was all fine.

Thank you ladies, puts my mind at ease to know hopefully there will be something in place to avoid it happening again.

@Lukewarmtea24 best of luck for when baby comes. I hope it's not too much longer for you!
