Fetal fraction + nipt

Hi everyone

We’ve just had our NIPT result back and absolutely delighted to have everything (we did th most “comprehensive” test) deemed as very low risk, we’ve also been blessed with a baby girl according to the results. We are so over the moon, however, my fetal fraction was 4.7% which (after googling) I’m learning is quite low therefore worrying the results may not be as accurate.

Maybe I should wait until the 20 week scan to confirm gender and that everything is ok? 🥺

The NIPT was taken when I was 14 + 3 weeks. Can anyone with low fetal fraction in their NIPT, share their experiences? Xx

Is this after the first scan? I'm having a scan next week and blood test after ! I didn't want to find out sex. So am I likely to be finding out with the results? Congratulations by the way x

Yeah, I opted for private NIPT after our NHS 12 week screening, due to the resukts we received from it. Are you asking about private NIPT or nhs screening? 🩷 @pollyanne000

@Fetalfractionquestion yes the NHS screening! What is as your result from the nhs one and did they tell you gender on that as well? Glad your private screening has come back low risk x

If they weren't sure, your result would have come back as inconclusive. That fetal fraction is fine.

No, no gender given at the nhs. Not via scan or combined screening bloods. They don’t give those to you there, so don’t worry! 🩷 it’s only the nhs 20 week where you will get given gender (if you like) and even so, some trusts don’t give this out at all. I kept the sex a surprise for my first and as long as you tell them this at the start of every appointment, it should stay a surprise 🤞🏻

What I’m talking about is a private blood test that checks chromosomal abnormalities and also provides you with the sex too, which we opted for. It’s not cheap though 🫠🫠 x

Thank you for the reassurance. I just can’t help but think 4.7% is pretty low and maybe my results aren’t as accurate as I originally thought… but you’re right, they’d be inconclusive otherwise 😕

My twins foetal fraction was very low - just at the cut off for the test so be deemed valid - around 4% - I know the number seems really low but it's actually pretty normal x

Thank you for replying 🩵 were the results correct in the end? Did you also find out gender? X

@Fetalfractionquestion

Yes they were accurate! Being fraternal twins they couldn't give the full test results - just the Edwards / Pateus / Downs results

There were question marks over one twin (the one with the lowest fetal fraction - she actually failed it the first time and the fraction was too low and I had to have a redraw) and the doctors did say if I hadn't done the NIPT they would have done some additional genetic testing/amnio as she was very small and her femur length was very small but as I had done the NIPT they were satisfied
