12 week screening - is it automatic that you will be high risk (1:150) if over 40?

I’m just trying to prepare myself for the phone call with the results.

Has anyone over 40 ended up with odds better than 1:150 or is it standard that we are all referred on for an NIPT/amnio/CVS?

I had my 12 week (13+5week) scan at 40. Due to the position of the baby they were unable to get the relevant measurements before the 14 week cut off.
I was referred for a QUAD test at 20 weeks, results came back 1:1200. I’m a high risk pregnancy due to age, weight and IVF but low risk for Downs etc.
Good luck in your pregnancy :)

No, I was low risk after 40. It’s not a given you will be high risk.

Lots of people over 40 who have the combined screening test at 12 weeks get better odds than the 1:150. A lady I work with at 42 got hers back at 1:265.

You only get referred for further testing if 1:150 or higher. Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck x

Ah! I am pleasantly surprised to hear this. My midwife really emphasised that my age (41) would skew the results so I thought it would be a given.

No definitely not a given @Bluloo try not to worry! The combined screening takes lots of things into account, your blood test, the scan, your BMI, medical history etc, your age is just 1 factor x

Emmacb82 · 15/03/2024 11:13

I’m 42 and my results came back as low risk. With my first pregnancy at 34 they came back as high risk but all was fine in the end. So basically there’s not a given answer either way!

Hey OP. Currently 22+2. They couldn’t measure the NT of baby at 12 weeks so I got put as high risk due to that, my age (39) and my BMI. I had QUADS blood and come back risk of 1 in 139 for the 3 syndromes tested for. I had NIPT and come back low risk - they don’t tell you here what the risk is if it’s low. Good luck. I know how hard the wait is, it sent me mental and my anxiety was so bad. Keep us posted and positive thoughts xx

Can't remember the figures but it was extremely low risk for both mine and I was 40, and 42.

bloodynewusernameagain · 15/03/2024 21:23

My two came back as 1:695 ds, 1:50000 Edwards/Pataus at 39 y/o and 1:450 ds, 1:5000 (nhs had changed the low number reporting so this is lowest number now) at 40.5 y/o
Both times also had an nipt privately which had already confirmed low risk but I wanted to double check the Papp A levels in case they flagged anything.

Floonthewall · 15/03/2024 22:02

I'm 41 with a high bmi and currently 21 weeks pregnant. We were really worried but at 12 weeks results came back as 1:2000 for downs and 1:1400 for edwards/pataus so low risk.

Verite1 · 15/03/2024 22:05

I was 40/41 and was low risk

skeletonbones · 15/03/2024 22:13

I was low risk at 42. 1 in some number in the thousands that I've now forgotten.

curliegirlie · 16/03/2024 11:37

That's all really interesting to hear. I'm still TTC (and have been for 2 years, so at 41 have nearly given up hope....) but between my age and the fact my first has Down's syndrome I'd fully expect to come out as automatically high chance, so I'd hope that if I do finally get pregnant again I'd be able to bypass the combined test and automatically be offered the NIPT again (as I was with DD2). It's so interesting to read that so many of you have come out as low risk despite the age factor though.

Bluloo · 21/03/2024 11:13

I thought I’d come back with an update. I’ve just had my results - 1 in 2,200 for Down’s syndrome and 1 in 5,000 (the lowest they can give) for Edward’s or Patau’s.

I am utterly astonished!

I am 41 so I can only assume my Papp-A and HCG blood results are quite decent!
