Is anyone else suffering with migraines in pregnancy?

I have in my past in general suffered with headaches and migraines but I haven't had a bad one for a while until I became pregnant. I've not had to take my prescription for a long time. Now I'm pregnant I can't take the tablets anyway and even if I take paracetamol, go to sleep - I'm still waking up with one. I also have vertigo on top and it's driving me mad. I constantly feel crap!

How far along are you @linz1987? I was in a bad way with them up until 14 weeks, and then they went away until my baby was about 4 months old.

I wish I had any magic answers but I tried all the holistic stuff alongside paracetamol; soaking my feet in hot water and epsom salts, wearing a migraine cap, wearing migraine strips on the back on my neck. I had mixed results but they did help some of the time. Rest as much as you can, hopefully they lift for you soon.

I do long term sufferer here and Bain of my life they are!!! I'm on sumatriptan as if I don't take them they will be debilitating for days and I just end up throwing up it's vile so I have one sumatriptan at 50mg. Usually they're gone within a couple of hours, I have had to take 3 in the almost 7 wks I've been pregnant so far, I do not like taking them but I cannot cope feeling like that and the dr has assured me that they're as safe as they're aware it's not 100% but safer they said than me taking aspirin or ibuprofen as paracetamol does abs nothing for me unfortunately. There's a theory of sitting feet in very warm water helps but only occasionally works for me but worth a try! Xx

I am prescribed sumatriptan but been told I can't take them by my midwife. They told me the same in my first pregnancy. So I'm struggling along on paracetamol. Sometimes I don't even bother because they don't touch it so what's the point.

I'm 20 weeks now but been suffering for the last month or 2.

I also take the headache soluble tablets usually but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to take them either so I stopped when I found out I was pregnant.

I had them in my last pregnancy daily up until 27 weeks they were completely debilitating and I struggled to look after my daughter. This pregnancy I'm getting them every few days and relying on daily paracetamol but it dosent do much when the migraine actually hits. I'm 23 weeks. I'm finding that I have to be really on top of my water intake and have Atleast 3litres a day to keep them at bay, I'm also making sue I eat the minute I wake up and sometimes through the night too if I wake up which seems to help (breakfast biscuits have been handy for this)

@linz1987 I took zolmatriptans a few times with my first pregnancy as got a few at the start that in the first 6 wks and my LG is abs fine, I wasn't advised then not to take them and had abs no idea they weren't even safe as they do y advise you now not to take those ones and instead advised to use sumatriptan. They are awful though and I feel abs so sorry for anyone having them through pregnancy as it's hard enough. Xx

Have you tried sinus massage or acupuncture? I used to get awful migraines and that used to help also apparently soaking your feet in hot water and letting them soak no idea if it works but worth a try .

lifeparadox333 · 16/03/2024 07:49

@kiabella that's tough, they are abs vile! The first couple I had were prob two of the worst I've ever had! I just had to take the sumatriptan I really did try to hold off but it made it so much worse for me! It's a point about drinking more water tho, I've always been rubbish at this and will try a lot harder to get more fluids in, and I have abs found it a trigger if I don't eat on time and have to be so careful ensuring to eat before I start to get hungry as it kicks one right off! I've found the protein quakers porridge oats abs brill at keeping me full for a good few hrs and have them before bed and helps to keep me asleep and not waking up for food, so far anyway!! Xxx

@LizzeyBenett funnily enough was thinking about trying acupuncture last night as a local clinic randomly popped up on my Facebook a day or so before and I did wonder if it might be worth a try! I may very well give it a go, as even if it takes the edge of it, it'll be worth a go!! Thank you for the reminder! X

I had this. It may or may not work for others but I find caffeine helps migraines. I specifically took the paracetamol and caffeine tablets. I know it’s not recommended in pregnancy but it did help a lot. I think caffeine helps constrict the blood vessels that are dilated during migraines.

Ladyoftheweald · 16/03/2024 08:13

In both pregnancies I had them until around 16 weeks but then they did go. I yhink still having them at 20 weeks is unfortunate because i think 14-16 weeks is when they usually shift. You have my sympathy because they are (as someone said above) the absolute bain of my life. I used to try pressing pressure points. I'm now perimenopausal and they are the worst they've ever been.

ragdoll12345 · 16/03/2024 08:34

I often had them around period time, but when I was pregnant with my first child they were 10 times worse - there was nothing I could take. GP said they would stop after the 1st trimester which they did. Same thing happened with 2nd pregnancy but fortunately they weren't as frequent as the first time round. Took nothing just put up with them, which was hard with the 2nd pregnancy as I had a toddler to look after.
