Yes get flax seeds and mix it in with a smoothie or oats or something (I used at least a tablespoon once a day) works really well xxx

Apple juice

3 pregnancies and suffered every time, right up until the very end. But the moment I was no longer pregnant it was gone! So bizarre.

Anyway, I went round the houses finding things to work but if you want something quick and effective without having to eat high fibre foods all day, drink a glass of Prune juice in the morning on an empty stomach. It's not nice but down it and wash it down with some water. I found drinking it at room temp was the easiest way to down it the fastest.

I toyed with eating prunes, weetabix, Chia seeds, kiwis, etc etc - which all work to a certain extent, but I was fed up with having to alter my diet so much (when I already eat a very balanced diet with a lot of veg). If I ate another Prune I was going to throw myself out the window. So, I downed a glass of Prune juice every morning which helped keep things moving. Sometimes I'd still struggle, so I'd have another glass in the afternoon while going through a rough patch.

Also - drink as much water as you can throughout the day, this is essential!!

Good luck, I really feel for you.

Lactulose.

annlee3817 · 14/03/2024 22:41

I used to have a glass of pureed prunes before bed every night and it really helped. Figs were also good and Weetabix for breakfast

LizzeyBenett · 15/03/2024 06:52

Lots and lots of water and high fibre foods and try moving more x

Contact your GP who should prescribe something. I take Fybogel sachets twice a day, it really does help :)

SouthwestSis · 15/03/2024 08:05

You don't need a prescription, you can buy fybogel or movicol over the counter at any pharmacy.
Make sure you're getting enough activity also, try and aim for 8 or 9000 steps a day which helps keep your bowels moving

Butternut squash soup

Big bowl of porridge and dump an Actimel into it. Makes it taste good as well as softening things up!

Smoothies

Magnesium supplements help with sleep and the citrate ones also have a slight laxative effect. Might well be enough to make a difference if you get your fibre intake up a bit and drink enough fluids.

Thank you guys! Yes I do need to keep moving more, I’ve slowed down quite a lot since being pregnant, I might get some butternut squash soup tonight see if that helps xx

Weetabix or Bran flakes for brekkie and an Activia prune yoghurt each day! Keep hydrated and try and get a walk in every day. I had it really badly a couple of weeks ago but thankfully it's cleared up now. You don't realise how awful it is until you have it!!

bradpittsbathwater · 15/03/2024 10:12

High fibre never worked for me as I already have a high fibre diet. It would have made it worse. Lactulose helped me.

PoppingTomorrow · 15/03/2024 10:15

Stay well hydrated.
I took psyllium husk every night and had a big bowel.movement each morning.

Don't strain as it puts pressure on your pelvic floor!

Rosesanddaisies1 · 15/03/2024 10:24

Lactulose is helpful, you can buy over the counter. And don't strain, it will not help your pelvic floor. otherwise walking/yoga, and prunes!

scoobysnaxx · 15/03/2024 14:26

Lots of water and fresh veg
Prunes - I had the Ella's kitchen pouches as their convenient and already very smooth.

If you are constipated now please please PLEASE make sure you take care of your bowels right after childbirth. If they give you lactulose TAKE IT. And make an informed choice about codeine based meds - these f'd be up royally.

I became severely constipated in the weeks after my section and this lead to impaction and horrendous pains. Worst thing I've ever gone through. It's now led to what I suspect is an anal fissure that I am struggle to heal nearly 6 months on as I can't take anything due to breastfeeding!

I don't mean to scare you!

I just wish someone had forced me to do everything possible to resume regular bowl movements right after. Also, everyone waits for the first poop. I made the mistake of thinking 'I've gone, that's it no need for the lactulose etc anymore'. But no, keep going for weeks. My constipation happened about 3 weeks after baby was born.

Congratulations OP x
