Anyone been told the wrong sex at the 20 weeks NHS scan?

Hi! Just after anyone's experiences :)
Firstly I want to say I have absolutely no preference on the sex of the baby - I feel so so lucky to be told at the 20 week ultrasound that my baby is healthy, and feel incredibly grateful for this after suffering a miscarriage last year.
We recently went for our NHS anomaly scan where we were told our baby is a healthy little BOY (yay!)
However I can't shake this gut feeling that it might be wrong. I think maybe because everything was so fast I didn't get chance to see for myself?

I was told that it’s incredibly unlikely for a sonographer to think it is a boy if it’s not, because on the potty shots at 20 weeks if it’s a boy there’s a very obvious “sign”😂 so I wouldn’t worry!

Catopia · 14/03/2024 14:38

They can get it wrong but think it is quite unusual... however our friends were told it was a girl and it was a surprise boy...

MississippiAF · 14/03/2024 14:40

They can mistake boys as a girl, but if they see a boy, it’s a boy.

ThePunchBowl · 14/03/2024 14:41

It’s exceptionally rare for them to get it wrong if they’ve said boy.

Revelatio · 14/03/2024 14:41

Yes, boys are pretty obvious! I had a scan at 16w and the sonographer let slip it was a boy!

OverTheCountryClub · 14/03/2024 14:43

Yes, my 4yo was a girl at the 20w scan. Can confirm he is a boy 🤣

Givemepickles · 14/03/2024 14:45

Yup boys are really obvious. I didn't need the sonographer to tell me both mine were boys - it was there for all to see 😂

Rubyrubyrubyruby123 · 14/03/2024 14:46

Why would you trust “a gut feeling” over a qualified sonographer! Seems odd.

Not me, personally but I know someone who was expecting a girl and ended up with a boy.

I got a spoiler at my scan that I was having a boy and he was.

HighlandSpring85 · 14/03/2024 14:55

Not 20 weeks or NHS but I was told at a private 16 week sexing scan that I was having a boy.. she's definitely a girl!

TallulahBetty · 14/03/2024 14:55

Of course they can get it wrong. No scan is 100%.

Mumofteenandtween · 14/03/2024 15:01

My brother and his partner were told girl but was actually a boy. Can’t imagine him being a girl now!

That way round is quite common I think.

The only time I know of “told boy, actually girl” was a friend who was having twins. She was told 2 boys but it turned out to be one of each. I think getting it wrong is more common with twins though.

mrsed1987 · 14/03/2024 15:03

As everyone else said, it can happen but it's usually the other way round. Boys are a lot more obvious 🤣

L00k4m3x · 14/03/2024 16:41

I’m sure it can happen but it’s never happened to me. I was told at both 20 weeks scans they were both boys and it was right. I don’t think they get boys wrong a lot of the time as it’s quite obvious!

Littleleafer28 · 14/03/2024 17:15

Heheh thanks everyone! I have another scan in a few weeks time so hopefully that will put my mind at ease.
I was told a boy would be obvious, but I genuinely didn't see a thing down there 😂but I know a trained sonographer would 100% know better than me!

I had a boy and want to find out what sex the next baby was. We were told it was a girl. Either way we would be thrilled. I didn't want anyone to ask if we were disappointed with a second boy so we didn't tell anyone. Parents friends, no one knew. Everyone was thrilled with our new baby girl. No need to tell anyone.

Cityzen74 · 14/03/2024 22:02

I know someone who was told baby was a boy at a few scans and she is definitely a girl.

SENlife · 14/03/2024 22:07

I was told girl at 20 weeks, scan the day of birth showed a boy so I had a couple of hours to adjust. Although I always had a gut feeling he was a boy, in fact we hadn't bought anything for a girl at all

MrSlant · 14/03/2024 22:13

I have some experience with ultrasound examinations from being a student and also exploring whether to continue my training later on in my career so I've seen a lot more than average and can 'read' most types of ultrasound. DS2, whilst I didn't want to know really, was sitting on the probe and it was like a 7 year old boys drawing of what you would expect Grin. DS/D I looked and the sonographer looked and we both decided we couldn't see any extras, also at a further scan there was nothing to be seen to suggest boy. Anyway, he's grown up now and it's a lovely part of his birth story that we get to laugh how we were calling him 'she' up to the actual reveal. So yes, yes we can get it wrong sometimes!

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 14/03/2024 22:15

We had a private scan at 17 weeks with our first and were told boy. At NHS scan at 20 weeks, nope, she’s a girl (which she was)! So it does happen that way round but the early scans are well known for being less reliable than at 20 weeks. It’s not a total certainty but the chances of them getting it wrong at 20 weeks and thinking they see a penis when they don’t, are very low. I’ve never met or heard of anyone that has happened to. If you’re worried, just don’t buy too much blue!!

What did you have?

SJM1988 · 29/09/2025 13:04

It happened to a friend of mine - told boy at 20 week scan...then told girl a few weeks later at a check up scan (not sure what for). They had a girl.
