Hi all I found out im pregnant at 35 after a chemical in Jan. (previous thread explained) and I was wondering, if i manage to get past my expected AF date.. when would be the best time to book an early scan for reassurance weeks wise? I am absolutely terrified. thank you 💜 xx

At 6 weeks you should see a heartbeat, although 7 if you are not certain of your dates.

Hi, congratulations! You can go at 6 weeks but sometimes it’s too early to see anything depending on your dates - which can be even more stressful. I went at 7 weeks and was able to see a heartbeat, yolk sac etc.

worth saying that early scans can require a transvaginal scan - I wasn’t prepared for that for first baby!

Good luck 😊

I wouldn’t go till 7 weeks, I had one due to bleeding at 6 weeks and I had to come back at 7 because it wasn’t clear.

Unfortunately I had 3 early scans in that pregnancy and it resulted in an MMC found at 12 weeks. So in all honesty I completely avoided them this time round. They weren’t reassuring, they just meant at that moment baby was okay.

I’m currently 38 weeks :) I hope everything goes well for you.

On here people were advising having one at 8+ weeks so you can really see something. I ended up waiting 9 weeks and saw arms and legs! My clinic does transvaginal scans until 10 weeks so they can get the best images.

All the best with this pregancy 😊

I had IVF which requires a viability scan we had 1 at 6+2 and 1 at 8+3. Apparently the risk of miscarriage drops quite a lot after a heartbeat is seen at 8 weeks so I would wait until then if only having one. There was a lot more to see at the 2nd scan, little arm buds waving away rather than just a black blob!
I have to say I found it really reassuring as we had an empty sack at a previous viability scan, if we hadn't have had that scan I'd have got to nearly 10 weeks before I'd known anything was wrong.

I had a few and they picked up my miscarriage early so it was worth it for that. Unfortunately I had one where we could see the heartbeat but a few weeks later it ended in miscarriage so I didn’t really feel that reassured!!

I'm also going to chime in and say an early scan may actually have the reverse effect and cause anxiety as it may be too small / early / ill-positioned to find a heartbeat. In which case you'll have to sit around for 1 or 2 weeks waiting to do another scan but with Dr Google to keep you company

This is exactly why we didn’t have any this time round. Because last time 3x scans showed a healthy baby. Then at 12 weeks a different story. So I knew it would cause more anxiety this time.
