Gassy newborn, is this normal?

FTM question.

Has anyone else noticed their baby being really gassy and passing lots of really foul smelling farts? Our little girl is just over 3 weeks old and the past 4/5 days has been passing lots of farts that smell and her stool has been more loose, initially yellow but this evening it was green. It’s not frequent loose stools just once or twice a day, but I’m more worried about the gas. We’ve been giving her Aptimal to supplement breastfeeding since birth but for the past two days I switched to Aptimal comfort for colic to see if it helps and there’s not been much change. She’s also really fussy after a feed and doesn’t go straight to sleep. Once she’s asleep she sleeps 3 hours with formula and 1/2 hours with breastmilk as usual but it now takes a good 45 mins-1 hour to get her to sleep after each feed. I have no idea if this is related to the gassiness.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Also going to speak to the health visitor tomorrow for advice.

I could have written this exact post ! ( baby girl now 3 months ). First time mum also, honestly my daughter was the same, I sometimes thought it sounded like it was coming from an adult along with the smell ! I tried changing her milk ( which helped a little ) I tried all different drops, Infacol I feel has been a great help. I spoke to many doctors and health visitor about this as I was getting worried and thought maybe something was wrong, their digestive track just takes a lot of developing in the first weeks/months and it is perfectly normal. Sometimes I say to my DP “ was that you or her “ 🤣 please don’t worry about it, Aslong as she doesn’t seem uncomfortable/in pain .. it will get better. Congratulations on your baby girl 🌻

I'd be glad she is farting! They get themselves into an awful state with trapped wind.

They do struggle with digestion to begin with. I didn't realise they have to learn how to poo so I was like, why is this baby screaming and going bright red?! Apparently it's not that easy to push poo out while also relaxing the lower muscles to allow it to come out.

You might find some tummy or back rubs help settle them. It does take a while of doing it though.

Hi OP, congratulations. My little boy is almost 12 weeks, and we've had a rough ride. This is my second baby but very different to my first!

I'm not at all diagnosing your baby and jumping to conclusions but have a look at CMPA symptoms. My boy was so uncomfortable from week 2 but it took until week 8 for someone to suggest he had CMPA. His sleep was awful, foul nappies, horrendous colic and really uncomfortable at feeds. Hopefully it's not that and you can rule it out - but on the off chance it is, the sooner you can treat it the better. My little one has it quite mild and all the symptoms could have been shrugged off as something else, but all put together I knew something wasn't right. Trust your gut and push for help if you do feel like something isn't right.
