Pain in right sided ovary/groin/hip - 5 weeks pregnant

Hi all,
wondering if anyone has experienced similar and can explain it?

since about 4w2d pregnant I’ve had pain which has got worse (in now about 5w) just on my arm right side. I think it’s around the hip/ovary areas just in from my hip. I can also feel aching in my lower back and in my hip in general when I walk.

I had an early scan yesterday which thankfully showers a pregnancy had implanted in my uterus (although I’m aware there is a very rare chance of a second pregnancy implanting and causing ectopic, which is my fear now!). No corpus luteum was seen. I went home without an explaination for the pain and aches. No bleeding or shoulder pain.

im finding it odd to have these bad pains so early on - most things I read suggest pelvic or ligament pain or associated with second trimester or when the body is expanding more …

had anybody experienced similar in early pregnancy ? What is it?! X

If they are sure it’s not an ectopic then it’s often round ligament pain

TheSnowyOwl · 09/03/2024 14:20

I’ve always had ligament pain from four weeks of pregnancy and it sounds like that’s what you have.

Carlotta27 · 09/03/2024 14:21

Thank you! Round ligament pain would be a great explaination (as it’s not a second ectopic pregnancy hiding!) - was you pain one sided too?

Mine has always been one sided but it could be either side that hurts at any time.

Carlotta27 · 09/03/2024 15:15

@TheSnowyOwl Thanks so much for sharing, makes me feel less worried. And also sorry that you’ve had to deal experience this - definitely not pleasant so early on in pregnancy x

It could be the corpus luteum, the pain is normal. I had it aswell. You will have pains probably everywhere in the next couple of weeks.

XenaTheWarriorPrincess · 09/03/2024 21:54

It's not ligament pain this early.

It's the corpus luteum cyst on your ovary. It's the follicle the egg released from that becomes a hormone producing cyst that produces eostrogen and progesterone until the placenta takes over.

It can be painful and is quite normal. Mine was pretty bad at times and felt almost identical to ovulation pain.

Carlotta27 · 10/03/2024 00:52

Thank you! @XenaTheWarriorPrincess

Interestingly the sonographer couldn’t see a corpus luteum on my scan. I have a five day luteal phase and my corpus luteum degenerates early so I use progesterone pessaries to compensate for it, so she assumed my corpus luteum had degenerated already … Will ask about this again x

Could be ligament pain. I had SPD in my first pregnancy from week 9. I'm now nearly 11 weeks into this one and I've had the same twinges on and off for weeks already. Needing to sleep with a cushion between my legs already.

Carlotta27 · 11/03/2024 18:02

@RoseH36 thanks for that, I’m going to try the pillow tip tonight! X

Hello, I’ve just done my own thread without seeing yours. I have EXACTLY the same thing! 3w+6, (4 weeks in a few hours 😂)

Terrified it could be ectopic. It’s too early for me to go for a scan too, isn’t it? Does your pain come and go? Mine is short lived, sharp/tugging pains on the right hand side. Comes and goes. Started last night, stopped all of today, now I’ve just had a few more twinges. Trying hard not to worry!

RoseH36 · 11/03/2024 18:22

@Carlotta27 good luck, hope it helps.

Carlotta27 · 11/03/2024 21:13

@Sparksi hello, I’m so sorry you’re experiencing - early pregnancy is so full of anxiety!

for peace of mind, you can ring your local EPU. They booked me in for a scan at 5 weeks as that’s the earliest they can usually see the location of the embryo on the screen.

i was told that usually at 4 or so weeks it’s very unlikely to feel an ectopic. In my case the midwife said the hormones released in early pregnancy can very early on result in joints and muscles moving slightly.

so i really expect there isn’t ectopic (and they’re quite rare anyway!) but only a medical professional can confirm that, so perhaps for peace of mind you can get an early scan?

another word of warning, two days after my internal transvaginal ultrasound, over this weekend, I experienced some light spotting. Of course if really worried me and I rang the midwife helpline and was told that it’s very normal after an internal scan. Just sharing that so that you don’t have another reason to panic like I did! X

I found implantation painful for my first pregnancy. I also had some bleeding around 6 weeks. It made me think I would miscarry but I didn’t.

JessFar · 22/05/2024 12:25

Hi @Carlotta27 how is everything going for you?
I have similar pain x

Carlotta27 · 22/05/2024 12:29

Hey @JessFar im 16 weeks pregnant on Friday and all is looking good!

I rang the EPU and was offered an early scan to rule out an ectopic. We saw the sac in the right place and the staff were very kind and understanding about it all. They said pain can be caused by the corpus luteum cyst where you ovulated from.

If you’re worried then it may be worth ringing your local EPU for an early scan for reassurance. Good luck x

@Carlotta27 that is wonderful news! I’m delighted for you 🩷 ok thank you I’m going to call my EPU but glad to hear positive story from you. Wishing you all the best for the next few months x

Hi @Carlotta27 how is everything going for you?
I have similar pain x

Identical situation, they said probably pain from the corpus luteum and I’m now 14 weeks x

Carlotta27 · 22/05/2024 12:53

@JessFar thank you! Chances are you will be fine but it’s a good plan to get it checked :)

Thanks for talking about this. I had the same weird pain in my first pregnancy, and now in my second is the same, left side, sharp pains that come and go, randomly during the day, low intensity. I didn´t know it was a thing, now I feel a bit of peace about it.
I´m 8+5 weeks

JessFar · 16/06/2024 08:25

Hi,
I thought I’d update for those who have experienced similar and are worried.
I’m now 8+3w.
I had a scan at 4+5w they checked placement and all was fine. The EPU said the pain was related to scar tissue from the surgery of my previous ectopic (have seen scar tissue being the cause of pain on a few posts. My pain was on the side where I have a tube so the scar tissue pain can affect both sides dependent on what it’s stuck too).
I had another scan at 6+5w and they saw the heartbeat and all was progressing normal. I don’t go back until I’m at 12 weeks now so 🤞🏼 all is still on track, but I’m trying to not worry and just take each day as it comes.
If you are experiencing pain, you’ve had an ectopic before and you want to be seen quickly, you could go to a&e and contact your EPU at the same time. This is what I did, it meant I had bloods done within an hour at A&E as the EPU notified them I was there. Once they saw bloods were ok they then booked me in for the 4+5w scan to be the next day so I could go home and rest that night. It’s very stressful when faced with the fear of another ectopic or potentially losing your only remaining tube and your worries are justified! So do what you can to alleviate that stress.
all the best x
