Cat bite - 34 weeks pregnant

I've been bitten by a cat this morning. Not my cat, it was a missing cat I've seen all over Facebook so I picked him up and took him in my house and contacted the owner.

Unfortunately he saw my cat and freaked out and bite me.

I was quite surprised at how much blood poured from my hand from just a cat bite, but it stopped after I ran it under cold water and cleaned it

If I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't worry, but I'm 34 weeks and my hand feels very sore, almost joint pain?

I can't get any child care and the wait in my A&E at the moment is 8 hours, my 2 year old cannot wait that long.

I read that the whooping cough vaccine has tetanus in it so I don't think I need that

But just wondering how risky it is to just leave it? Obviously if it gets worse I'll have to go to but I don't want to go and put my toddler through all that if they are only going to look at it and wash it

Can you get an appointment at your GP? A nurse practitioner would also be able to help. They will probably give you antibiotics.

You need antibiotics for a cat bite that has punctured the skin. Do you have a walk in centre, urgent care or minor injuries nearby?

ALLthecheeses · 08/03/2024 13:30

Minor injuries or 111 for an out hours GP appointment.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/03/2024 13:31

I'd call 111 rather than ask strangers on the internet

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/03/2024 13:31

Hope it's ok x

You really need to get this checked out. Cat teeth can break easily, a friend got bitten by a cat and needed to have an X-ray to ensure that there were no teeth in the wound.

Thank you, I've contacted my gp online so hopefully they will be able to help and won't tell me to go to A&E

Came here to say this, I needed an xray to double check and antibiotics x

Definitely get it checked out. Cat bits are very prone to infection: their teeth are almost like hypodermic needles and a bite can turn nasty

Rosesanddaisies1 · 08/03/2024 14:17

yes definitely get it checked out, cat's mouths are grim (and I have a cat...). Also, cat poo is very toxic in pregnancy, and they could have that in their mouth. if you don't hear from GP today I'd go to a minor injuries unit

I was bitten by a dog whilst pregnant and they gave me antibiotics and just made me clean it with plain water but I did go to a&e my cat also clawed me round the head when pregnant with my first, I’d get checked out but in meantime keep it clean, dry and any fevers or redness tracking up your arm/limb that was bitten I would get checked sooner. Hope it’s ok op,

Our old cat bit my dad years ago and 111 made us go to A&E late at night rather than wait for the GP in the morning. He was given a tetanus jab and the wound was cleaned and dressed. Can't remember if he was given antibiotics or not but if that's what the NHS does for a man in his late 60s I'd imagine they would want to check out a pregnant woman with a similar bite.

Do you have a local minor injuries? If not, go to A&E. I think you're right about whooping cough vaccine having tetanus but they may want to boost you further or offer antibiotics.

Thanks everyone I managed to get in at the gp and they've given me antibiotics to prevent an infection

Vet nurse here ,tooth breakage is not common , but infection very much is.
Absolutely act on this and see a medical professional asap, in my profession this happens a fair bit and the vast majority of bites to humans become infected in a ridiculously short time .
Medical professionals are a lot more switched on nowadays to cat bites and aren't as likely to fob you off without giving antibiotics like in the past.
The average dog bite is not as bad as a cat ,don't hang around.

That's good to hear .
