Sharp intense stabbing pains lower left abdomen - 18 weeks

I've been having really strong, sharp, stabbing pains in my lower left abdomen constantly for over day now. The pain can be so strong that it has me keeled over and walking or driving is almost unbearable. The area feels tender and maybe a little swollen

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and have called the dr but they can't see me until tomorrow, so I'm stressing in the meantime. Have called in sick to work and lying in bed in a lot of discomfort, even to roll over

Has anyone else experienced this or have any clue what it could be?

Could be round ligament pain

Could be round ligament pain

I wondered this but the pain has been constant for around 36 hours, I thought ligament pain tended to come and go

It can last from seconds to hours
is there a reason you contacted gp and not the midwife. Midwife’s can get you in to see antenatal care , probs the better option as opposed to gp

If you’re doubled over in pain then I’d contact your midwife or local maternity triage to get checked over. They will be faster than your gp.

It was my midwife who told me I needed to make a gp appointment for asap 🤷‍♀️ midwife didn't really tell me anything other than the pain didn't seem "normal"

Pregnancy is a scary time!

That’s a shame she’s not done more! If she’s requested an appointment asap then can she contact the gp and explain you need seen today? My midwife has done that in the past.
Have you got a local maternity triage you could phone?

If you weren't pregnant would you be going to A&E with a pain like that? We assume everything is pregnancy related once there is a baby growing but there's lots of other things that excruciating abdominal pain could be and I don't think it would be ott to go to A&E personally. Even if it IS baby related it's not a typical pain and no harm to have it checked. I say this as the wife of a doctor who often works in A&E so I don't tend to just recommend it lightly! Good luck x

Honestly, call the midwife and get her to give you some guidance.
Hopefully it's just ligament pain or constipation etc but do please check

Itsachange · 07/03/2024 12:12

Lower left pain very often means you need a poo. But I agree, worth getting checked out properly if the pain is so extreme..

BumbleAw · 07/03/2024 12:23

Thanks everyone, maybe I'll try calling again, I just hate to be a nuisance
Midwife seemed to think too much discomfort for ligament and I haven't had any bowel issues, so I guess it doesn't leave me with a lot of choice!

Just wanted to say thank you. Turns out it was a ruptured degenerating pedunculated fibroid and I have an internal infection. I'm so glad you said to get checked out - I was so concerned I was being a timewaster but turns out it was actually something that needed help and your message helped me see that

I'm so glad! And what a scare for you! Presume it's been dealt with now? Are you feeling better? Hope all goes smoothly for the rest of your pregnancy 💗
